    Notizen: Abstract This paper presents an estimate of the amount of nitrogen involved in the use and trade of feedstuffs for a number of world regions. Livestock production has shown a steady increase world-wide as a result of an annual increase of 1.4% in developing countries and 0.9% in developed countries during the period 1960–1990. Particularly in developing countries, the strong growth of animal production and a tendency towards decreasing reliance on grazing and increasing importance of fodder crops and feed concentrates, cause a major increase in the consumption of feedstuffs. Cereals form the major feedstuff world-wide. The current global use of cereals for feed is about 30% of the total use (57% in developed countries and 17% in developing countries). Net trade of cereals and other feedstuffs represents 4–8 Tg N per year, which is only 4–7% of the total N consumption by the world's animal population. A strong growth of the per capita food consumption, a relative increase of meat consumption, coupled with a strong population growth, may cause a strong increase of the net trade of cereals. In particular the countries of the Middle East, North Africa and China may become important importers of cereals. In future, the N transport between regions in the form of feedstuffs may become an important component in the global N cycle.

    Notizen: Abstract An attempt is made to incorporate into a quasilinear viscoelastic constitutive equation of the Boltzmann superposition type the two mirror relations of Gleissle, as well as his relation between the steady-state first normal-stress difference and the shear viscosity curve. It is shown that the three relations can hold separately within this constitutive model, but not simultaneously, because they require a different nonlinear strain measure, namelyS 12 (γ) =γ − a (γ − 1) (a = 0 forγ ≦ 1,a = 1 forγ ≧ 1) for the mirroring of the viscosities,S 12 (γ) =γ − a (γ−k 2/γ) (a = 0 forγ ≦k, a = 1 forγ ≧k) for the mirroring of the first normal-stress coefficients, and $$S_{12} (\gamma ) = \frac{1}{2}\gamma \{ 1 - erf [ln (\gamma /2 \sqrt k )/\sqrt {2 ln k} ]\}$$ for the third relation. Hereγ denotes the shear strain and erf the error function. Experimental data on melts of a low-density polyethylene, a high-density polyethylene and a polypropylene show that the mirror relations are passable approximations, but that the third relation meets reality surprisingly close if the right value ofk is used.

    Notizen: The basic relationships are presented for predicting the creep and stress relaxation as a function of physical aging, loading time, and temperature of amorphous polymers processed under such conditions that their thermal treatment amounts to a quench from the melt to the glassy state. A nomogram construction, based on these relations, is proposed and developed for a particular polymer, namely an extrusion type acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), RONFALIN EST. The applicability of the procedure is restricted to the isothermal viscoelastic behavior at low stresses and strains of unplasticised amorphous plastic materials quenched from the melt to the glassy state.

    Notizen: An important parameter in the various molding techniques used in polymer processing is the rate of cooling the object. The effect of the thermal history on the linear viscoelastic properties was studied, mainly by means of stress relaxation experiments on ABS samples in which the influence of other process variables was eliminated. In agreement with recent literature data, it appeared that the time dependence of the stress can be represented by a universal formula, provided that no perceptible change in temperature or relaxation of volume takes place during the experiment. The position of the momentary relaxation curve along the time scale can therefore be described by one characteristic mechanical relaxation time tr. The value of tr is affected by the temperature T, but even more by the thermal history, i.e., by the rate of cooling, q, and the annealing time, ta, at the measuring temperature previous to recording of the relaxation curve. In the case of very rapidly quenched samples, exact proportionality was found to exist between tr and ta at temperatures below Tg -15°C. In slowly cooled samples tr can be longer by a factor of ten than in quenched samples, at the same T and at annealing times of about 1 h. The difference decreases with increasing ta, but remains substantial up to ta values much longer than the total cooling time.
