    Notes: A mathematical model and numerical algorithm are developed to predict electrodeposition rates from a 2-D jet of electrolyte that impinges on a flat surface. The principal situations of interest are for applied voltages that produce current densities below the limiting current. The motion is assumed to be at high speed with the jet inducing a thin laminar boundary layer on the surface; a progressively thinner concentration layer and an electrochemical double layer near the surface are accounted for. Two cases, corresponding to a submerged and unsubmerged jet, are considered. A boundary integral method is used to compute the current density along the plate in a general iterative numerical procedure coupled to the solution of the hydrodynamic, concentration and electrochemical boundary layers. The results show that relatively high deposition rates occur near the point of impingement and that altering the jet angle relative to the surface influences local electrodeposition rates significantly.

    Notes: Pressure drop due to fluid friction has been measured in a smooth tube; in six smooth concentric annuli; and between smooth, parallel, flat plates. The data cover the viscous, transition, and lower turbulent ranges of flow. Friction factors are in agreement with theory in the viscous range and can be correlated uniquely in the fully turbulent range by means of a modified hydraulic radius concept. Limits of the transition region in annuli are functions of the ration of inner and outer radii. Correlations in the fully turbulent range permit friction factors for the noncircular ducts to be predicted within the uncertainty of smooth-tube data. Such factors can be used for the prpose of correlating other variables as well as for direct calculation of pressure drop.

    Notes: Profiles of mean local velocities have been experimentally determined in a smooth, concentric, horizontal annulus having a radius ratio of 0.331. The test fluid was water at room temperature flowing steadily at Reynolds numbers in the viscous, transition, and lower turbulent ranges. The transitional profiles, obtained by means of an impact probe, are summarized and discussed. Limits of the transition zone are established, and variation of the radius of maximum velocity with Reynolds number is confirmed.

    Description: The visible-airglow experiment is an airglow photometer designed to measure various thermospheric emission features during the day and night both at low latitudes and in auroras. The photometer has two distinct optical channels, a high-sensitivity channel with a large field of view and a low-sensitivity channel with a narrow field of view to resolve small features. The system is protected by a combination attenuator and cathode back-biasing scheme which allows measurements of maximum sensitivity within a fraction of a second of viewing the sun. This experiment will be a part of the scientific payload on all three Atmosphere Explorer missions.
