    Description: The fragmentation of a 225 MeV/n O-16 beam was investigated at the Bevalac. Preliminary cross sections for mass = 13, 14, 15 fragments are used to constrain the nuclear excitation functions employed in galactic propagation calculations. Comparison to cosmic ray isotonic data at low energies shows that in the cosmic ray source C-13/C approximately 2% and N-14/0=3-6%. No source abundance of N-15 is required with the current experimental results.

    Notes: A dynamic model of five-stage (C+D)EDED bleach plant was developed using SIMNON a dynamic simulation language developed at Lund Institute of Technology, as a platform. The model is composed of individual modules that represent each bleaching stage. Each module includes chemical addition and mixing, diffusion and reaction in a retention towel, and washing. These unit operations are coupled with chemical kinetics for each bleaching stage using appropriate models. A relationship between the (C+D)E Kappa number and the input absorption coefficient to the D1 stage was used to link the delignification and brightening partial sequences of the bleach plant. The model, verified using steady-state data, was used to model the dynamic response of the plant to step changes in production rate, (C+D) chemical addition, and incoming Kappa number, as well as the open-loop response of the plant to a simulated variation in incoming Kappa number. The modular structure of the program allows a variety of bleach plants to be assessed once flow parameters and chemical kinetics are known. The dynamic model can also be used to develop and compare control strategies before being implemented at the mill.

    Notes: A series of rigid polyurethane foams of densities varying from 65 kg/m-3 to 400 kg/m-3 have been tested in compression as a function of rate and temperature. Two yield points are observed, the lower one being associated with the surface layers, the higher with the bulk of the material. The yield points may be predicted to a first approximation for the higher density foam using a model based on the buckling of a thinwalled cylinder.

    Notes: The operation of a twin screw extruder processing a powder or granular solid is reviewed. The operating variables of screw speed and barrel temperature profile interact with a number of design parameters -  screw design, die geometry, feed zone geometry and with the material properties, in determining machine performance. The factors that determine output and pressure development are specified in a sequence of block diagrams. The dynamic response of an operating machine to disturbances in the steady state conditions is explained in the light of the established relationships and interpreted in conventional control theory terms. Attention is drawn to the importance of mixing in the chambers formed by the screw channels and of the residence time distribution in determining the quality of the final product.

    Notes: The tensile properties of high and low density polyethylene specimens produced under careful crystallization and annealing procedures have been determined. A morphologically controlled brittle-ductile transition has been observed for high density polyethylene. Although the lamellar thickness appears to determine the transition, a postulate involving molecular fractional on during crystallization as the cause is offered. For ductile materials, dependence of the Young's Modulus on morphology is interpreted using the fiber-composite analogy of Halpin and Kardos. Yield stress varies as modulus and achieves maximum values consistent with estimates of the critical resolved shear stress of polyethylene crystals.

    Notes: Creep tests up to 106 seconds in tension and compression were conducted on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polypropylene (PP). Measurements of longitudinal and lateral strain provided values for tension and compression strain ratio. These increased with time and stress for PMMA and PVC from about 0.38 to 0.44. The results for PP increased from 0.44 to above 0.5 in. tension and showed a decreasing ratio in compression, which suggested a time and stress dependent structural change. Volumetric strain was computed from the linear strains and plotted against stress and axial strain. Except at 102 seconds, the relationships were non-linear up to volumetric strains of about 0.3% and in the cases of PMMA and PVC there were greater changes of volume in tension than compression.

    Notes: Previous studies have evaluated low molecular weight crystalline materials as latent heat sinks for passive thermal protection systems. This study evaluated crystalline polymers as heat storage materials. Differential scanning calorimetry and Instron thermomechanical analysis are applied in dynamic studies of cumulative histories of melting and recrystallization. Commercially available crystalline polymers with melting temperatures Tm ≥ 100°C can provide fully reversible heats of fusion ΔHm ≥ 35 cal/gm under programmed heating-cooling cycles. A linear polyethylene (Marlex 6050) is modified by radiation crosslinking to retain shape stability above Tm with-out loss of heat storage capability. The essentially zero vapor pressure and inherent shape stability of crosslinked crystalline polymers may provide unique advantages as uncontained, non-expendable, heat storage materials.

    Notes: The rheological properties of three types of fluids that exhibit large normal stresses are examined and compared. These fluids have a constant or nearly constant viscosity and can be used as model viscoelastic fluids, covering a range of viscosity from 0.1 to 124 Pa.s. One lubricant, Emkarox FC 31-45000, is shown to have the characteristics of a second-order fluid. Series difficulties encountered in measuring the rheological properties of the Separan - corn syrup solutions (Boger fluids) are reported. The Emkarox and solutions of polyacrylamide (Pusher 700) in mixtures of glycerine and water are proposed as better model fluids.

    Notes: The problems encountered with cold formed thermoplastic material, namely, low heat distortion temperature and stress and solvent crazing, can be overcome by using a laminate consisting of a reinforced thermosetting core sandwiched between two drawable face sheets. This process imposes a restriction on the material by the need for a curing cycle to transform the core into a hard, three dimensional network. To take full advantage of the very fast metal forming technique, the curing should be accomplished outside of the forming apparatus and without external restraint. In order to impart a practical shelf life to the laminate at room temperature, the chemical requirements of the core can only be met with an elevated temperature cure. This in turn places an additional restriction on the face sheets, as they will have to withstand the curing conditions without external constraint and without dimensional changes of the formed part. Finally, the face sheets then have to become an integral part of the formed laminate upon curing of the latter, involving a high adhesive strength between the cured core and the face sheets. The criteria for the selection of the materials for various layers are presented as well as the limitations on the construction of the entire laminate.
