Notes: An investigation of small-angle scattering produced by polarized light from stretched and annealed polymer systems containing spherulites yields information on the supermolecular transitions that occur during such treatment. A series of semicrystalline polymer systems (films, fibers) show that stretching leads to deformation of spherulites and subsequent transformation to an orientational supermolecular order. The size of the single element C2 of the supermolecular order in the direction of stretching, determined from the distance between the layer lines of the scattering pattern, is related to the diameter D0 of the initial spherulites by the relation C2 = KD0λs, where λ, is the draw ratio of the macrosystem and K is a parameter determining the deformability of the spherulites. For polyethylene at room temperature K is unity and for polychloroprene it is 1.2. Changes of C2 after annealing and restretching of the systems also obey this ratio.

Notes: Abstract The body weight and morphometric parameters of the state of the pancreatic insular apparatus (the relative percentage of islet tissue, of A- and B- cells, the number of islets) in fetuses and the adult offspring of healthy female rats and male rats with alloxan diabetes were studied. No change in these parameters was found, indicating that under these conditions the genetic systems of the males are undamaged and that these lesions are not transmitted to the progeny. On the basis of these findings and of the importance of diabetes in the female in the development of insular deficiency in the progeny demonstrated previously, the role of the environment in which the fetus develops in the formation of the diabetes is emphasized.

Notes: The crystallization of flexible-chain molecules of different degrees of coiling is considered. The nature of the phase transition during crystallization is discussed. The revision of established notions on phase transitions in polymers leads to the concept of crystalline topomorphism, i.e., the existence of two crystalline types with different modes of packing of macromolecules in the macroscopic crystal though they belong to the same lattice class: folded-chain crystal (FCC) and extended-chain crystal (ECC). Phase diagrams in coordinates of degree of coiling vs temperature are plotted. The values of molecular orientation and temperatures at which each of both mechanisms of crystallization takes place are evaluated. The mechanisms of ECC growth under equilibrium conditions and under conditions of molecular orientation are discussed. It is shown that the melting of ECC obtained by the process of orientational crystallization is a second order phase transition, being analogous to a crystal-nematic phase transition. At the same time the melting of FCC provides all the features of a first order transition.

Notes: The results of the study of polypropylene crystallization from the oriented paracrystalline state and the transition to the smectic state observed during isometric melting of the samples crystallized in this manner are interpreted from the viewpoint of structural transition in helical polypropylene macromolecules inevitably involving the local melting of helices.

Notes: A theory of the superheating phenomenon, i.e. the increase of the melting temperature Tm, of oriented samples of flexible-chain polymers with the heating rate, is presented. Calculations show that Tm is higher on heating under isometric conditions than under equilibrium conditions. Analysis of the kinetics of melting suggested that the reason for superheating is the incomplete relaxation of amorphous chain parts. Moreover, Tm increase with the heating rate tending to the value of Tm under isometric conditions.

Notes: A thermodynamic analysis of nucleation during the crystallization of oriented polymer melts was performed. It is based on a model of the structure of the amorphous state of polymers and takes into account the generalized effect of such defects as loops and tie-chains on the end surface of the nuclei being formed. Equations are derived for various parameters characterizing the process of orientational crystallization. It is found that loops or folds which can remain on the nucleus surface even at high degrees of orientation may lead to an increase in the potential barriers to nucleation and a decrease in the melting temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Based on the concept of phase dualism of a polymer system, by which the Gibbs free energy is considered to consist of a liquid-like and a gas-like component, the effect of conformational states in phase transitions (second order transition, crystallization) is explained. Particularly, the performed analysis shows that hypothetical phase transitions suggested by Gibbs and DiMarzio as well as by De Gennes can be realized under the effect of an external mechanical force field. Further, the pecularities of flowing polymer systems are explained by these phase transitions.
