    Notes: In the hydrogenation of α-methylstyrene by means of a suspended palladium-alumina catalyst in a stirred reactor the mass transfer of hydrogen through the liquid is the rate-controlling step and the resistance to chemical reaction at the catalyst surface is negligible except at extremely rapid rates of stirring. This system therefore provides an excellent means of establishing the effects of operating variables and mechanical construction on mass transfer coefficients in liquids in stirred reactors. It is convenient to consider the total resistance to mass transfer as consisting of two separate resistaces: in the liquid adjoining the bubbles and in the liquid adjoining the suspended solid particles; thus R = Rb + Rs.A general equation was evaluated from experimental data based upon unit volume of liquid.

    Notes: The performance of spherical catalyst pellets with radially nonuniform distributions of activity is simulated under parallel reaction networks closely resembling hydrocarbon oxidation reactions. Both reaction paths are assumed to be exothermic with the desired path exhibiting lower activation energy requirements than the undesired one. It is shown that nonuniform activity distributions enhance effectiveness and selectivity over a large range of values of the Thiele modulus. Multiple steady states in effectiveness and selectivity are observed for certain values of the heat of reaction parameter.

    Description: The simultaneous measurements of VHF radar and HF Doppler array systems are used to observe three-dimensional wind speeds and gravity waves with the purpose of determining the density perturbations at different heights of mesosphere and thermosphere induced by the convective motions associated with subtropical heavy rainfall during the time period of the raining season. Frequency, horizontal wavelength, vertical wavelength, and phase velocity of the gravity waves are determined from the Fourier power spectral analysis of horizontal and vertical wind velocities. The results are compared with those of density perturbations caused by typhoons, tropical storms, and winter-time drizzles associated with convective motions. It is shown that the maximum amplitude of the density perturbations caused by the gravity waves is +/- 10 pct which is greater than that of density perturbations caused by gravity waves associated with weak convective motions in winter time and is smaller than that caused by the gravity waves associated with tropical storms.

    Description: A new (1990) version of the NASA/MSFC Global Reference Atmospheric Model (GRAM-90) was completed and the program and key data base listing are presented. GRAM-90 incorporate extensive new data, mostly collected under the Middle Atmosphere Program, to produce a completely revised middle atmosphere model (20 to 120 km). At altitudes greater than 120 km, GRAM-90 uses the NASA Marshall Engineering Thermosphere model. Complete listings of all program and major data bases are presented. Also, a test case is included.
