Notes: We report the predicted combining site structure of the monoclonal antibody fragment. NC10.14, which is specific for the superpotent sweetener, N-(p-cyanophenyl-N′-(diphenylmethyl)guanidine acetic acid, using computer-aided molecular modeling and experimental methods, such as fluorescence spectroscopy and circular dichroism. This is the first computer-aided modeling study on a λ-chain antibody fragment. We have also identified the amino acids that are involved in ligand binding. Aromatic residues. L:91(W), L:96(W), and H:100G(Y) are predicted to make van der Waals contacts with the p-cyanophenyl moiety of the ligand. Residue H:56(K) is predicted to provide a counterion for the acetic acid moiety, and H:50(E) provides the negatively charged potential for interaction with the positive guanidinium group. We also make a comparison of the binding site architecture of NC10.14 with that of a related monoclonal antibody fragment NC6.8. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A variance range analysis of the x-ray line profiles for seven cottons (native, ureatreated, and mercerized) has been carried out to get two estimates of the crystallite size from (1) the slope and (2) the variance intercept. Assuming the crystallite length of cellulose to be the same in ramie and native cottons under ideal conditions of growth, the relative fluctuation of the repeat length along the b-axis has been calculated for all the samples. This degree of paracrystalline lattice distortions is negatively correlated with the fiber bundle strength at zero gauge and appears to be the same as the imperfections referred to in the weak link theories of fiber strength. While the orientation parameters are also well correlated with strength, the degree of crystallinity does not seem to have any influence. Wilson's rigorous mathematical treatment of the number-average particle size, in relation to the two estimates from the variance slope and intercept as well as the particle size distribution, has been successfully applied for the first time to cotton fibers leading to a clearer understanding of crystallite size-strength relationship.

Notes: Acyclic dience metathesis (ADMET) depolymerization of functionalized furan-based polymers prepared via aqueous ring-opening polymerization of 7-oxanobornenes has been investigated. Results indicate that while very high molecular weight poly [exo-N-methyl-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2,5-diene-2,3-dicarboximide] can be depolymerized to oligomers with ease, poly [2,3-dicarbomethoxy-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2,5-diene] is more resistant to depolymerization under similar conditions. This difference may be due to differential interaction of the carbonyls in the side chains with the metal atom of the catalyst in the proposed metallacyclobutane intermediate. ADMET depolymerization of poly [2,3-bis (trifluoromethyl)-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2,5-diene] was feasible, however, the extent of depolymerization was decreased due to the use of a coordinating solvent (THF) used during the depolymerization process. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of amorphous, aromatic, polyaryl ethers has been investigated. Detailed synthesis procedures are provided. The main thrust of these activities was to synthesize polymers which could serve as castable amorphous matrix resins for carbonfiber composites and which would be highly resistant to radiation degradation. It was important that these polymers not contain any aliphatic groups in order to contrast their behavior with the commercially available Bisphenol-A polysulfones. The approach taken was to synthesize a series of statistical or random copolymers derived from hydroquinone and biphenol together with 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone. In order to produce copolymers of high molecular weight, modified techniques were developed which utilized potassium carbonate as a weak base and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as the aprotic dipolar solvent. Detailed procedures are provided in this paper for the synthesis of high molecular weight copolymers of this type. In addition, stress-strain, dynamic mechanical properties and preliminary electron beam (e-beam) degradation studies are reported significantly. Improved mechanical property retention after e-beam exposure was observed with the all aromatic polyether sulfones.

Notes: A method for solving the problem of heat exchanger network synthesis in chemical process plants is presented based on the use of the out-of-kilter algorithm. The method represents an extension of previous approaches based on network flow problem formulations. A new approach to overcome the constraints in forbidden-match problems, termed the dual stream approach, has been developed based on the use of a stream as both a hot and a cold stream. This approach results in considerable savings in utility costs in certain forbidden-match problems. An algorithm to deal with heating or cooling utilities that undergo temperature changes, termed non-point-temperature utilities, is presented using the transshipment model. The new algorithm determines the utility mass flow rates and pinch points accurately.

Notes: New data on residence time distribution (RTD), axial mixing, and Peclet numbers for both phases in liquid spray columns are presented.Drop size distribution is of major interest. Continuous phase velocities affect RTD variance at high flow without appreciable effect on dispersed phase RTD variance. New correlating equations are presented.

Notes: An annular flow pressure drop model has been developed and compared with experimental data obtained on a pilot-plant-size Pease-Anthony-type venturi scrubber. Droplet and film accelerations as well as wall friction, based on the two-phase Lockhart-Martinelli correlation, are considered. Excellent agreement with experimental data is demonstrated for a wide range of throat gas velocities, liquid to gas ratios, and film flow rates for a single scrubber geometry.
