Notes: The transport equations for a power law fluid are used to solve the transient and non-isothermal problem of filling a disk-shaped cavity. Using the results obtained it is possible to predict gate pressures, fill times and short shots. Furthermore, the velocity and temperature fields can be obtained throughout the filling process. This information specifies the formation of a frozen surface layer during filling. Rigid PVC was primarily used in the simulations, but some results are also given for linear polyethylene, nylon 6-6, ABS and polystyrene.

Notes: The five independent elastic moduli C11, C12, C13, C33, and C44 for uniaxially drawn polyoxymethylene with draw ratio λ = 1-16 have been measured from -60 to 120°C by an ultrasonic method at 10 MHz. Wide angle x-ray diffraction and birefringence measurements indicate that the chains in the crystalline regions are fully aligned at λ = 5 but the degree of amorphous orientation increases steadily up to the highest draw ratio. Below the major amorphous γ relaxation (∼0°C at 10 MHz), only the axial longitudinal and tensile modulus, C33 and E0, show large increases. At 120°C, however, all the moduli increase with λ, with E0, E90 (transverse tensile modulus), C44 (axial shear modulus) and C66 (transverse shear modulus) increasing 10, 2.5, 3, and 2.5 times, respectively, as λ rises from 1 to 16. This improvement in mechanical properties may be attributed largely to the effect of taut tie-molecules and crystalline bridges. Whereas the two-parameter model of Seferis seems to be valid only below the γ relaxation, the Halpin-Tsai equation can give a reasonable description of the mechanical behavior for the highly oriented samples (λ〉5) over the entire temperature range.

Description: Based on an extensive series of normalized full cell Li/TiS2 cycling studies, open-circuit storage tests, microcalorimetry and AC impedance studies, and chemical precedent, we propose an integrated chemical model consistent with experimental observations concerning the behavior of numerous LiAsF6/cyclic ether electrolytes. The particularly striking potency of certain additives such as 2-methylfuran and the hydroxide action resides in their ability to intercept several different adverse catalytic processes concurrently in the bulk electrolyte as well as the Li anode and TiS2 cathode.

Description: Nondestructive methods such as ac impedance spectroscopy and microcalorimetry are used to study the effect of cell cycling on the lithium/electrolyte interface. The reactivity of both uncycled and cycled lithium towards various electrolytes is examined by measuring the heat evolved from the cells under open-circuit conditions at 25 C by microcalorimetry. Cycled cells at the end of charge/discharge exhibited considerably higher heat output compared with the uncycled cells. After 30 d of storage, the heat output of the cycled cells is similar to that of the uncycled cells. The cell internal resistance increases with cycling, and this is attributed to the degradation of the electrolyte with cycling.

Description: The successful operation of an ambient temperature secondary lithium cell is primarily dependent on the stability of the electrolyte towards lithium. The lithium electrode on open circuit must be inert towards the electrolyte to achieve a long shelf life. The reactivity of tetrahydrofuran and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran based electrolytes with additives such as 2-methylfuran, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, and 3-methylsulfolane was investigated by microcalorimetry and ac impedance spectroscopy techniques. Also the stability of electrolytes by open circuit stand tests was studied. Addition of ethylene carbonate and 2-methylfuran additives was found to improve the stability of tetrahydrofuran and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran based electrolytes. Long term microcalorimetry and ac impedance data clearly confirmed the higher stability of ethylene carbonate/2-methyltetrahydrofuran electrolyte compared to the 2-methyltetrahydrofuran and propylene carbonate/2-methyltetrahydrofuran electrolytes.

Description: In an attempt to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the high temperature superconducting oxides, high T(sub c) composites were prepared composed of the 123 compounds and AgO. The presence of extra oxygen due to the decomposition of AgO at high temperature is found to stabilize the superconducting 123 phase. Ag is found to serve as clean flux for grain growth and precipitates as pinning center. Consequently, almost two orders of magnitude enhancement in critical current densities were also observed in these composites. In addition, these composites also show much improvement in workability and shape formation. On the other hand, proper oxygen treatment of Y5Ba6Cu11Oy was found to possibly stabilize superconducting phase with T(sub c) near 250 K. I-V, ac susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements indicate the existence of this ultra high T(sub c) phase in this compound. Detailed structure, microstructure, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of the superconducting composites and the ultra high T(sub c) compound are presented and discussed.
