Notizen: Holographic reflective interference patterns arising from a small displacement of the surface of polymer solids provide a very sensitive means for detecting the internal stress related to molecular orientation, as well as measuring very small time dependent deformations not accessible by conventional means. Applicability of this technique using 6328Å laser light on various mechanical studies in polymeric solids is discussed.

Notizen: A new capillary rheometer incorporated in an instrumented transfer molding press has been developed. This rheometer is effective for determining the viscosity characteristics of thermoset molding compounds under both isothermal and typical molding conditions. In examples of the rheometer's utility, the power law indices of two commercial epoxy molding compounds have been determined to be approximately 0.7. Additionally it has been shown that preconditioning typical epoxy compounds at 47 percent relative humidity causes a viscosity decrease of about 40 percent owing to plasticization of the epoxy resin.

Notizen: Mechanical properties of a composite of glassy and rubbery polymers, ABS, were studied. Orientation induces two effects: (1) the intensity of the loss dispersion attributed to the rubbery component initially increases, then is reduced, and (2) a new loss peak at a temperature approximately 40°C below the original loss peak for the rubbery component appears. Assuming that this new peak is due to the dilated rubber particles embedded in the glassy matrix under strain, it is judged from the theory of Newman and Strella that a built-in strain of 6% would be sufficient to cause this shift in Tg. Above the Tg of the rubbery component, the strain energy required to break increases with temperature. The reinforcement through incorporation of rubber particles is accomplished by enhancing the ability of the glassy matrix to draw on a local, microscopic scale. Such a local cold drawing may well be identified with crazing of glassy polymers.

Notizen: The frequency dependence of the complex-shear modulus of a nonbrominated flame-retardant polycarbonate has been successfully represented from 1 hertz (hz) to 1 gigahertz (ghz) at 190°C using a mechanical analog of the Cole-Cole dielectric analysis. Two sets of retardation times were required centered about 74 msec and 16 μsec. The β value for the short time response was 0.83 and for the longer time response was 0.58. The values of JoN determined from the common point at which the terminal-zone arc and the transition-zone arc touch the Jc″ = 0 axis yields an entanglement molecular weight, Me, of 1470 g/mole.

Notizen: Ultimate properties in polymeric solids strongly depend on thermomechanical history. We have shown that the polymer structure which depends on thermomechanical history can be quantitatively described by the relative amounts of enthalpy and entropy. The excess enthalpy decreases upon annealing and increases under the tensile stress. The increase in excess enthalpy reduces the relaxation time; thus a local brittle-to-ductile transition may be induced by stress concentration. It follows that in a well-annealed material, this transition is more difficult to induce. Effects of molecular weight and orientation are also discussed in terms of dissipation of strain energy as the condition required for the strength of polymeric solids.

Notizen: The water absorbed by poly(vinyl acetate), PVAc, at 23°C was found in two states. The first, which can account for up to 4 weight percent, was bound to the polymer. The second was in a freezable or clustered form. The latter type of water had no effect on PVAc's glass temperature, whereas, the former kind plasticized Tg. In annealing studies, the enthalpic and dielectric response of PVAc when held at a fixed temperature increment, ΔT, below Tg, was observed to be independent of the amount of bound water. The time dependence of the shift in the dielectric relaxation spectrum and the recovery of the enthalpy towards its equilibrium value as PVAc approached its equilibrium glassy state from a lower temperature as compared to a higher temperature was initially slower. This delayed response to expansion was of the order of the polymer's average relaxation time at the lower temperature. A model was proposed to explain this asymmetric behavior based upon changes in the polymer's free volume as well as its occupied volume.

Notizen: Free volume fraction of the Williams-Landel-Ferry(WLF)-Doolittle type has been applied to the analysis of the nonequilibrium state for the glassy polymers. The free volume fraction is a two parameter variable since it depends on the free volume and the occupied volume. The excess entropy is derived from the mixing of vacant and occupied sites, and for polymers a factor is added which corresponds to disordering the molecular segments. A relationship between the excess entropy and enthalpy is derived. For a given level of fractional free volume, there is a unique rate constant associated with changing that level of the fractional free volume. The reciprocal of this rate constant, which depends on the exponential order of the fractional free volume, can be considered as a time constant for changing the molecular conformational probability, and its value is in the order of the average dielectric relaxation time in the corresponding state. When mechanical deformation is. imposed with a rate which is too fast as compared to this time constant, the deformation without a change in the conformational probability, i.e., the reversible elastic deformation, will ensue. In contrast, a sufficiently slow deformation will be accompanied by a change in fractional free volume and the excess entropy, and the above-mentioned time constant will change with deformation. Since dilation will tend to shorten this time constant, tensile deformation will result in reducing the modulus accompanied by the increase in entropy. Shear deformation is considered as a mixture of compression and tension, where only tension contributes to a change in entropy, and the net result is the strain softening which can be predicted from the tensile behavior. Uniaxial compression is controlled by the shear behavior, and the excess entropy and the fractional free volume increase, while the occupied volume decreases with strain. A constitutive relationship has been proposed which accounts for the effects of temperature, pressure, strain rates and thermal history on nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of polymeric glass.

Notizen: Recent studies of the morphology of semicrystalline polymers have demonstrated the inadequacy of the familiar fringed micelle concept. It is now generally recognized that polyolefins crystallize in a spherulitic form having a skeletal structure of coherent crystals with a fibrous habit. Crystallization occurs in two stages: (1) spherulitic growth of crystalline lamellae, and (2) partial crystallization of residual melt in regions between lamellae. The dependence of modulus on degree of crystallinity in polyethylene indicates that the crystalline network carries much of the elastic energy acquired when the plastic is subjected to stress. Two of the mechanical transitions are also related to morphological structure. The high temperature or α transition is attributed to motion within lamellae while the intermediate or β transition is attributed to motion in disordered regions between lamellae.

Notizen: Non-linear stress relaxation data were obtained for polycarbonate and polystyrene as a function of temperature, strain magnitude and thermal history. Data were analyzed according to the previously proposed free volume model to account for the shift of relaxation times with strain and thermal history. The result of the analysis is shown to be in close agreement with the tensile stress-strain data. The yield phenomenon is analyzed as a rate dependent strain-induced glass to rubber transition.
