    Notes: Abstract Four inbred strains of mice, DBA/2J, C57BL/10J, BALB/cJ, and SJL/J, were mated in a diallel cross. The cerebella of the F1 generation were examined for the presence (Type I) or absence (Type II) of an intraculminate fissure between vermian lobule IV and vermian lobule V (the ventral and dorsal lobules of the culmen). One strain (DBA/2J) consistently expressed the Type I pattern. Another strain (SJL/J) expressed predominantly the Type II pattern. The other two strains (C57BL/10J and BALB/cJ) and many of the hybrids exhibited variability in their expression of the foliation patterns. The results were analyzed using biometrical genetic procedures and showed significant additive and dominance genetic effects and a maternal effect. Correlations of these cerebellar anatomical variants with the development of behavior are discussed.

    Description: Seventy-nine graphite/polyimide compression specimens were tested to investigate experimentally the IITRI test method for determining compressive properties of composite materials at room and elevated temperatures (589 K (600 F)). Minor modifications were made to the standard IITRI fixture and a high degree of precision was maintained in specimen fabrication and load alignment. Specimens included four symmetric laminate orientations. Various widths were tested to evaluate the effect of width on measured modulus and strength. In most cases three specimens of each width were tested at room and elevated temperature and a polynomial regression analysis was used to reduce the data. Scatter of replicate tests and back-to-back strain variations were low, and no specimens failed by instability. Variation of specimen width had a negligible effect on the measured ultimate strengths and initial moduli of the specimens. Measured compressive strength and stiffness values were sufficiently high for the material to be considered a usable structural material at temperatures as high as 589 K (600 F).

    Description: Failure mechanisms observed using transparent fiberglass/epoxy birefringent materials. Technique based on use of transparent fiberglass/epoxy birefringent material. Transparency allows visual observation of location of initial laminate failure and of subsequent failure propagation; birefringence allows laminate stress distribution to be observed during test and also after test if permanent residual stresses occur. Nondestructive technique developed to observe failure as it develops and as propagates within laminate.
