Notes: Abstract Semi-empirical molecular orbital methods proposed up to now seriously fail to describe hydrogen bonded systems associated with (H2O) n . A new scheme of parametrization using a semi-empirical method is proposed. We tested hydrogen bonding associated with the water clusters (H2O) n . The results are found to be close to ab initio Hartree-Fock quality, indicating a good promise for studying hydrogen-bonding systems other than O-H...O moiety.

Notes: The excited state of pyrene observed in fluorescence and pulsed laser techniques is used to show that pyrene is solubilized in the polymer coil of aqueous solution of polymethacrylic acid (PMA) at pH 〈 4-5. This leads to a decreased access of molecules such as I-, Tl+, CH3NO2, and O2 to excited pyrene in the polymer coil. The protection of the excited state by solubilization in the polymer is sufficient to enable 3-bromopyrene phosphorescence to be observed at room temperature in these systems. Increasing the pH of the system uncoils the polymer and leads to increased accessibility of excited pyrene to CH3NO2; eventually, at pH 〉5, the pyrene is ejected into the aqueous phase of the system. In the presence of micellar solutions of surfactants increasing pH transports the pyrene from the polymer to the micellar aggregates. These fluorescence techniques are used to investigate the kinetics of expansion of the polymer coil. The system is suggested as a suitable model for the interaction of pyrene with biopolymers such as DNA.

Description: A perfluorinated alkyl ether diacyl fluoride prepolymer (molecular weight about 1500) was coreacted with Epon 828 epoxy resin and diamino diphenyl sulfone to obtain an elastomer-toughened, glass-cloth composite. Improvements in flexural toughness, impact resistance, and water resistance, without loss of strength, modulus of elasticity or a lowering of the glass-transition temperature, were realized over those of the unmodified composite. Factors concerning optimization of the process are discussed. Results suggest that a simultaneously interpenetrating polymer network may be formed which gives rise to a measured improvement in composite mechanical properties.

Description: Two new bismaleimide resins based on the N, N'-m-phenylene-bis(m-amino-benzamide) structure have been synthesized and characterized. The mixtures of the two resins gave better handling, processing, mechanical, and thermal properties in graphite composites than did the individual resins. The mechanical strength of the cured graphite composites prepared from the 1:1 copolymer of the two bismaleimide resins was excellent at both ambient and elevated temperatures. The physical and mechanical properties of the composites from the new bismaleimide matrix resin systems are compared with conventional composites based on epoxy and other bismaleimide systems. The copolymer system provides another method for improving bismaleimide resins.

Description: Vinylstilbazole (vinylstyrylpyridine) and vinylpolystyrylpyridine was prepared for the purpose of modifying bismaleimide composite resins. Cure studies of resin systems were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The vinylstyrylpyridine-modified bismaleimide composite resins were found to have lower cure and gel temperatures, and shorter cure times than the corresponding unmodified composite resins. The resin systems were reinforced with commercially available satin-weave carbon cloth fabricated by hot melt (or solvent) techniques. Thermal stability, flammability, moisture absorption, and mechanical properties of the composites (such as flexural strength, modulus, tensile and short beam shear strength) were determined. Composite laminates showed substantial improvements in both processability and mechanical properties compared to the bismaleimide control systems.
