Description: The irradiation of gold nanorod colloids with a femtosecond laser can be tuned to induce controlled nanorod reshaping, yielding colloids with exceptionally narrow localized surface plasmon resonance bands. The process relies on a regime characterized by a gentle multishot reduction of the aspect ratio, whereas the rod shape and volume are barely affected. Successful reshaping can only occur within a narrow window of the heat dissipation rate: Low cooling rates lead to drastic morphological changes, and fast cooling has nearly no effect. Hence, a delicate balance must be achieved between irradiation fluence and surface density of the surfactant on the nanorods. This perfection process is appealing because it provides a simple, fast, reproducible, and scalable route toward gold nanorods with an optical response of exceptional quality, near the theoretical limit.

Description: A number of polymers of differing molecular structure, viscosity, copolymer composition, and production procedures, screened for production of strong, tough Nicalon/siliconoxycarbide composites, are discussed. Variables during polymer synthesis include pH, water/methoxy ratio and phenyl/methyl ratio. Final processing temperatures of the composites range from 1200 deg to 1400 deg C. The filler is derived from pyrolysis of the 50 phenyl/50 methyl silsesquioxane copolymer pyrolyzed to 650 deg C, then milled to less than 1-micron powder. Composite samples were fractured to evaluate the influence of matrix composition, final fabrication temperature, and use of filler on the composite mode of failure, modulus, strain capability, and strength. Incorporation of filler was found to increase matrix compressive strength and to influence matrix shrinkage and cracking.

Description: Satellite radar interferometry data from 1995 to 2004, and airborne ice thickness data from 2002, reveal that the glaciers flowing into former Wordie Ice Shelf, West Antarctic Peninsula, discharge 6.8 +/- 0.3 km(exp 3)/yr of ice, which is 84 +/- 30 percent larger than a snow accumulation of 3.7 +/- 0.8 km(exp 3)/yr over a 6,300 km(exp 2) drainage basin. Airborne and ICESat laser altimetry elevation data reveal glacier thinning at rates up to 2 m/yr. Fifty km from its ice front, Fleming Glacier flows 50 percent faster than it did in 1974 prior to the main collapse of Wordie Ice Shelf. We conclude that the glaciers accelerated following ice shelf removal, and have been thinning and losing mass to the ocean over the last decade. This and other observations suggest that the mass loss from the northern part of the Peninsula is not negligible at present.
