    Description: The Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-A) obtained images over the southern portion of the San Rafael Swell in eastern Utah. SEASAT SAR and LANDSAT MSS images and thermal inertia data from the Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM) were correlated with the SIR-A data. Radar images obtained with different incidence angles and different illumination directions were compared with images obtained in other portions of the spectrum for geologic remote sensing.

    Description: It is proposed that techniques be developed and used for quantitative interpretation of shuttle imaging radar-B (SIR-B) data for lithologic identification and mapping. The use of backscatter versus incidence angle signatures derived from SIR-B images is to be investigated. The use of SIR-B with other sensors for geologic mapping is also to be considered. Anticipated results are discussed in terms of geologic mapping.

    Description: Reflection coefficients are found at normal incidence for a large class of homogeneous lossy half-spaces with a one-dimensionally inhomogeneous or stratified lossy layer on top. Solutions are in terms of Hankel functions of complex argument to decrease cancellation error at high frequencies. One special case is that of layers on a homogeneous half-space where the dielectric constant in each layer may vary in a quite general manner. A Wronskian is used to insure the critical computations are correct. The reflection of chirped pulses is considered. Solutions are obtained by applying the fast Fourier transform. It is found that for a typical relatively long normalized 'long' pulse the power reflected as a function of time is essentially the power reflection coefficient for the frequencies swept out, whereas for a relatively short 'long' pulse, with the same relative change in frequency and the same number of oscillations there is only the uniform attenuation by the power reflection coefficient of the center frequency. By a 'long' pulse we mean a pulse whose spatial length is long compared to the thickness of the reflecting layer.

    Description: As part of NASA's continuing assessment of future communication satellite requirements, a study was conducted to quantitatively scope current and future telecommunication traffic demand in the South Pacific Archipelagos. This demand was then converted to equivalent satellite transponder capacities. Only inter-island telephony traffic for the Pacific Basin Region was included. The results show that if all this traffic were carried by a satellite system, one-third of a satellite transponder would be needed to satisfy the base-year (1976-1977) requirement and about two-thirds of a satellite transponder would be needed to satisfy the forecasted 1985 requirement.

    Description: This report provides a context in which questions put forth by NASA's Office of Mission to Planet Earth (OMPTE) regarding the next steps in spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) science and technology can be addressed. It summarizes the state-of-the-art in theory, experimental design, technology, data analysis, and utilization of SAR data for studies of the Earth, and describes potential new applications. The report is divided into five science chapters and a technology assessment. The chapters summarize the value of existing SAR data and currently planned SAR systems, and identify gaps in observational capabilities needing to be filled to address the scientific questions. Cases where SAR provides complementary data to other (non-SAR) measurement techniques are also described. The chapter on technology assessment outlines SAR technology development which is critical not only to NASA's providing societally relevant geophysical parameters but to maintaining competitiveness in SAR technology, and promoting economic development.

    Description: The wave tilt of a transverse electric (TE) electromagnetic wave over a linearly inhomogeneous lossy layer overlying a homogeneous half-space is studied. Two approaches are used: an exact formulation using solutions of Airy's equation and an approximate numerical solution using a large number of homogeneous layers with a linearly increasing dielectric constant. The numerical results of both solutions are practically identical as long as the thickness of the layers in the approximate model are somewhat smaller than a quarter-wave length.

    Description: The effects of Gaussian random fluctuation and linear change of the echo phase on the response of the azimuth matched processor of a synthetic aperture radar (airborne or spaceborne for ocean-surface sensing) is analyzed numerically. It is found that the random fluctuation would not alter appreciably the processor response if its standard deviation is less than pi, while its normalized correlation time is larger than 1. If these two bounding conditions are not satisfied, then the sidelobe level becomes relatively large and overshadows the central peak. In the case of linear displacement it is found that the main effect is the spatial displacement of the point scatterer in the image plane.
