    Description: The positions of Venus, Mars, and Jupiter were obtained in the VLBI radio reference frame by measuring the position of a satellite (natural or artificial) of each planet relative to an extragalactic source in the radio catalogue. From the results for Mars and Venus it is concluded that the offset in right ascension of the radio frame from the dynamical equinox defined in DE200 is 0.00 sec +/- 0.04 sec. The observations for Jupiter imply a correction to its position from DE200 of -0.18 sec +/- 0.04 sec in right ascension and -0.06 +/- 0.05 sec in declination on 1983 April 29. The right ascension of Jupiter relative to the inner planets has been measured independently using Doppler tracking data near Jupiter encounter from Pioneers 10 and 11 and from Voyagers 1 and 2 by tying the tracking station positions, through previous spacecraft missions, to the DE200 ephemerides of the inner planets. This technique yielded a correction to Jupiter's right ascension of -0.22 +/- 0.05 sec, in good agreement with the results from the direct radio measurements.

    Description: Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) results are presented for the two baseline sectors between the Goldstone DSN antenna complex and the overseas sites at Canberra, Australia and Madrid, Spain. Results from solutions using data taken between 1978 September and 1983 May show an apparent California-Spain baseline length increase of 21 cm during this time span, while the California-Australia length has remained constant. Statistical investigations of the integrity of the data are discussed along with dominant systematic error sources and their effect on baseline length determination. Results and interpretation of the time behavior of the angle between DSN baselines are also described.

    Description: We proposed to investigate and develop better models for the effect of the hydrostatic and water vapor components of the neutral atmosphere on delay for VLBI and GPS by using a Numerical Weather Model to better simulate realistic atmosphere conditions. By using a raytrace calculation through the model atmosphere at the times of actual VLBI observations, the potential improvement in geodetic results can be evaluated. Also, by calculating the actual variation of delays with elevation and azimuth, the errors in current mapping function models can be assessed. The VLBI data to be initially analyzed are the fifteen days of the CONT02 sessions of 2002 October which included eight stations. There are three segments to the research. 1) The PSU/NCAR fifth generation mesoscale numerical weather model (MM5) will be used to provide the state of the atmosphere with highest horizontal resolution of 3 km. 2) A three-dimensional raytrace program will be developed to determine the delays through the model atmosphere at the times and in the directions of the VLBI observations for each of the sites. 3) The VLBI data will be analyzed using both standard models for the atmosphere mapping functions and the mapping functions derived from the NWM raytracing.
