    Beschreibung: Throughout the last decade, Computer Aided Design was seen as a Great Promise. Much was accomplished, but that pales in comparison with what was promised. Ultimate achievement has always seemed just a step away. During the era of the early turnkey system, the one step was limited by modeling geometry through a wire frame. Besides being cumbersome to deal with in three dimensions, it was continually shown that a wire frame is ambiguous. This made the modeling of geometry for engineering purposes even more frustrating. The fundamentals of computer aided engineering design rest on the ability to do various analyses. Presently, solid modeling is taking the mechanical engineering CAD world by storm. There are no fewer than 20 solid modeling packages around the world, and more appearing with each vendor show. The question of integration, that is, the combination of elements of the CAD process into unified and easily usable design tools still exists.

    Beschreibung: A method is presented for analyzing a finite planar array of circular microstrip patches fed by coaxial probes. The self- and mutual impedances between array elements are calculated using the method of moments with the dyadic Green's function for a dielectric layer on a ground plane. The patch circuits are determined by using the reaction integral equation. The active input impedance as well as the active element pattern of the array are computed from a knowledge of the resultant patch currents. The calculated results for two-element and eight-element linear arrays are in good agreement with experimental data. The active reflection coefficient and element pattern for the center and edge elements of a two-dimensional array as a function of scan angle are also presented.

    Beschreibung: A method of calculating the input impedance of either a circular or a slightly elliptical microstrip antenna excited by a coaxial probe is presented. Using the reaction integral equation and the exact dyadic Green's function, the finite substrate thickness is taken into account in the formulation. Good agreement with experimental results for an elliptical patch is obtained and a design procedure for a circularly polarized antenna is presented.

    Beschreibung: An antenna was developed for the remote microwave measurement of ocean surface temperature during a flight test in a C54 aircraft. The basic antenna is a conical dual-mode horn similar to the dual-mode horn described by Potter (1963). The pertinent internal dimensions of the horn are given. The measured E and H plane patterns for the linearly polarized horn for a range of frequencies are shown in a graph.

    Beschreibung: In 1985, NASA Goddard's Flight Dynamics Division (FDD) began investigating how the Ada language might apply to their software development projects. Although they began cautiously using Ada on only a few pilot projects, they expected that, if the Ada pilots showed promising results, they would fully transition their entire development organization from FORTRAN to Ada within 10 years. However, nearly 9 years later, the FDD still produces 80 percent of its software in FORTRAN, despite positive results on Ada projects. This paper reports preliminary results of an ongoing study, commissioned by the FDD, to quantify the impact of Ada in the FDD, to determine why Ada has not flourished, and to recommend future directions regarding Ada. Project trends in both languages are examined as are external factors and cultural issues that affected the infusion of this technology. This paper is the first public report on the Ada assessment study, which will conclude with a comprehensive final report in mid 1994.

    Beschreibung: This paper reports on the progress of a study which will contribute to our ability to perform high-level, component-based programming by describing means to obtain useful components, methods for the configuration and integration of those components, and an underlying economic model of the costs and benefits associated with this approach to reuse. One goal of the study is to develop and demonstrate methods to recover reusable components from domain-specific software through a combination of tools, to perform the identification, extraction, and re-engineering of components, and domain experts, to direct the applications of those tools. A second goal of the study is to enable the reuse of those components by identifying techniques for configuring and recombining the re-engineered software. This component-recovery or software-cycle model addresses not only the selection and re-engineering of components, but also their recombination into new programs. Once a model of reuse activities has been developed, the quantification of the costs and benefits of various reuse options will enable the development of an adaptable economic model of reuse, which is the principal goal of the overall study. This paper reports on the conception of the software-cycle model and on several supporting techniques of software recovery, measurement, and reuse which will lead to the development of the desired economic model.

    Beschreibung: Using Richmond's reaction integral equation, an expression is derived for the input impedance of microstrip patch antennas excited by either a microstrip line or a coaxial probe. The effects of the finite substrate thickness, a dielectric protective cover, and associated surface waves are properly included by the use of the exact dyadic Green's function. Using the present formulation the input impedance of a rectangular microstrip antenna is determined and compared with experimental and earlier calculated results.

    Beschreibung: A small lightweight NCSS was designed, constructed, and is now being bench tested at Wallops. The unit provides 256, 2.7 nm wide channels in the visible spectrum from approximately 400 to 1100 nm. The present input slit provides a spectral impulse response of about 10 nm. Up to five NCSS sensors may be bused to one data system interface. The NCSS contains a high speed, 16 bit analog to digital converter (ADC) with an integral wide-band sample-and-hold amplifier. The NCSS was developed primarily for use with the Airbone Oceanographic Lidar (AOL). A prototype NCSS is presently interfaced to the AOL. The AOL will use two new NCSS units onboard the Goddard P-3A aircraft. They will provide the AOL with high resolution sky and ocean spectra. The up-looking NCSS will provide the AOL data system (AOLDS) with down-welling solar radiance, and the down-looking NCSS will provide ocean color spectra. The solar radiance will be used to correct various ocean color algorithms now being researched.

    Beschreibung: The radar altimeter being developed for the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX) will have an inherent instrument precision of 2 to 3 cm. While some minor refinements may be possible in the future, major geophysical advances could be made if altimetric measurements over a wide swath of the Earth's surface were possible. The NASA Headquarters Oceanic Processes Branch is supporting a 3-year investigation of the technological issues inherent in the precision measurement of topography from spaceborne platforms at angles off-nadir. To explore the off-nadir measurement of topography, a flexible, airborne radar instrument system is being developed. Its hardware design is now complete, and it is made up of several subsystems. The antenna selected is a dielectric lens of .894 m diameter. The RF subsystem uses phase-locked oscillators, FET solid-state amplifiers, and times four frequency multipliers to develop a transmit signal at a frequency of 36.0 GHz and a local oscillator signal at a frequency of 35.4 GHz. Lecroy 6880 digitizers under computer control digitize the five receiver outputs. The digital subsystem consists of six single-board Heurikon processors. At this time, the instrument construction continues with final system integration planned for November 1988.
