    Beschreibung: Drought threatens tropical rainforests over seasonal to decadal timescales, but the drivers of tree mortality following drought remain poorly understood. It has been suggested that reduced availability of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) critically increases mortality risk through insufficient carbon supply to metabolism ('carbon starvation'). However, little is known about how NSC stores are affected by drought, especially over the long term, and whether they are more important than hydraulic processes in determining drought-induced mortality. Using data from the world's longest-running experimental drought study in tropical rainforest (in the Brazilian Amazon), we test whether carbon starvation or deterioration of the water-conducting pathways from soil to leaf trigger tree mortality. Biomass loss from mortality in the experimentally droughted forest increased substantially after 〉10 years of reduced soil moisture availability. The mortality signal was dominated by the death of large trees, which were at a much greater risk of hydraulic deterioration than smaller trees. However, we find no evidence that the droughted trees suffered carbon starvation, as their NSC concentrations were similar to those of non-droughted trees, and growth rates did not decline in either living or dying trees.     Beschreibung: Feedbacks between land carbon pools and climate provide one of the largest sources of uncertainty in our predictions of global climate. Estimates of the sensitivity of the terrestrial carbon budget to climate anomalies in the tropics and the identification of the mechanisms responsible for feedback effects remain uncertain. The Amazon basin stores a vast amount of carbon, and has experienced increasingly higher temperatures and more frequent floods and droughts over the past two decades. Here we report seasonal and annual carbon balances across the Amazon basin, based on carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide measurements for the anomalously dry and wet years 2010 and 2011, respectively. We find that the Amazon basin lost 0.48 +/- 0.18 petagrams of carbon per year (Pg C yr(-1)) during the dry year but was carbon neutral (0.06 +/- 0.1 Pg C yr(-1)) during the wet year. Taking into account carbon losses from fire by using carbon monoxide measurements, we derived the basin net biome exchange (that is, the carbon flux between the non-burned forest and the atmosphere) revealing that during the dry year, vegetation was carbon neutral. During the wet year, vegetation was a net carbon sink of 0.25 +/- 0.14 Pg C yr(-1), which is roughly consistent with the mean long-term intact-forest biomass sink of 0.39 +/- 0.10 Pg C yr(-1) previously estimated from forest censuses. Observations from Amazonian forest plots suggest the suppression of photosynthesis during drought as the primary cause for the 2010 sink neutralization. Overall, our results suggest that moisture has an important role in determining the Amazonian carbon balance.     Notizen: Average and local heat transfer coefficients were measured for transfer from circulating fluidized beds of sand particles (mean size 188 and 356 μm) to two water-cooled membrane wall surfaces located on one face of a 152 mm square by 7.3 m tall column. The measurements cover a range of superficial gas velocities from about 4 to 7 m/s, suspension densities from about 8 to 130 kg/m3, suspension temperatures from 150 to 400°C, and secondary-to-primary air ratios of 0 to 1.5. Heat transfer coefficients, averaged over a 1.53 m length of the membrane waterwall surfaces, depend strongly on suspension density, but show almost no separate dependence on gas velocity, bed temperature, or secondary-to-primary air ratio for the conditions studied. For the surface nearest the top of the unit, the coefficient decreases with distance measured downward from the top, suggesting that particles travel downward along the surface. As a result, averaged coefficients are lower and the influence of particle size is less than for previously reported circulating fluidized bed heat transfer measurements where miniature heat transfer surfaces were employed.

    Notizen: Previous published comparisons between fluidized-bed reactor models and experimental data have almost exclusively been in laboratory and pilot-plant scale equipment. This paper compares data obtained in an industrial phthalic anhydride reactor of 2. 13 m dia. using naphthalene as the feedstock with three models, the Kato and Wen bubble-assemblage model, the Kunii and Levenspiel three-phase bubbling-bed model, and Grace's two-phase bubbling-bed model. For the conditions of operation (U = 0.43 m/s, d̄p = 53 μm, H = 7.9 m, T = 636 K), all three models give similar predictions and each gives a good overall prediction of the conversion and selectivity if the reaction kinetics are based on the early study of DeMaria et al. (1961). Hydrodynamic parameters needed for the models are calculated from equations available in the literature. Grid and freeboard effects appear to play relatively minor roles in determining the overall conversion and yields for the reactor in question.

    Notizen: Overall heat transfer coefficients were measured for an instrumented horizontal tube of diameter 25 mm in the feedboard region above fluidized beds of 102 μm, 470 μm and 890 μm sand in a 0.25 m × 0.43 m × 3.0 m tall pilot scale column. The superficial air velocity varied from near minimum fluidization to 1.7 m/s. The instrumented tube was placed at different positions in a 16-tube bundle. The measured heat transfer coefficients were bounded for tubes near the expanded bed surface by the immersed tube values, and for remote tubes by the values for particle-free air in crossflow. The results are correlated within ± 12% by a simple equation which incorporates these limits. The results are in good qualitative and quantitative agreement with previous experimental results.
