Notes: Abstract The activity and selectivity of V2O5/γ-Al2O3 catalyst were studied in the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide by ammonia. The activity of the catalyst monotonically increases as a function of temperature, however, its selectivity decreases. The DeNOx reaction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia can be described well by a mathematical model, which considers selectivity-decreasing side reactions as well in a wide temperature range (220–420°C).

Description: Distribution of phytoplankton pigments was investigated in the relation to Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and light intensity in Vietnamese waters located at longitude 102E - 112W, latitute 23N - 7N. Over 200 samples collected at 58 stations were analyzed for pigments (Chlorophyll a, b, c and carotenoids) and degradation products (Phaeophytill). Chlorophyll a was measured by fluorescence. Results show that average values in the seawater were 0.18 ± 0.04 mg.m-3 for Chl-a; 0.05 ± 0.01 mg.m-3 for Chl-b; 0.062 mg.m-3 for Phaeophytill. Higher value of Chl-a occurred at the thermocline but maxima were found at 75 or 50m depths. Average value of Carotenoids concentration was very low about 0.052 ± 0.12 mg.m-3. The report used a model for the relationship between Chlorophyll a content and light intensity to estimate the primary production. Average value of primary production was about 9.04 mgC.m3.day-1 at the surface and 2.63 mgC.m3.day-1 at the bottom. The relationship between Chlorophyll and some environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity was examined. The effects of thermocline and halocline to the primary production were analyzed.

Description: A nutricline (as termed by Cullen, 1982) exists along the transect Nha Trang - Luzon during May - June 2000 investigation. Variation ranges of nitrate and silicate were comparable with data of JOMSRE-SCS investigation during April - May 1996 whereas the maximum value of phosphate was higher. Vertical distribution of nutrients was irregularly in euphotic layer, the highest concentrations were found in stations 3 and 12. In deeper layer nutrient concentrations increased with depth. Phosphate was concentrated in the western part of the transect; high concentrations of this element and silicate in euphotic layer may due to the effect of upwelling phenomena. N/P molar ratios were lower in euphotic layer, it caused by the nutrient consumption of algae. Better knowledge on chemical, physical characteristics and hydrodynamic regime in the region will contribute to the development of economic activities in the region.

Description: In the Vietnamese waters, the value of Chlorophyll a concentration ranged from 0.29 to 2.58mg.m-3, average value of 1.20  0.76mg.m-3 for the shallow waters and from 0.05 to 1.24mg.m-3, average value of 0.37  0.37mg.m-3 for the continental shelf waters. In the offshore, the Chlorophyll a concentration is relatively lower, ranged from 0.13 to 0.24 mg.m-3. The assimilated carbon index in the waters of Vietnamese continental shelf ranged from 0.84 to 4.25 mgC.mgChl-a-1.day-1, average value is 1.66  0.95 mgC.mgChl-a-1.day-1. In the culture pools, bay and coastal waters, the assimilated carbon index is highest, average value of 121.59  25.99mgC.mgChl-a-1.day-1. Using the Chlorophyll a concentration to assess primary production with the experimental equation showed that primary production ranged from 100 - 500mg.m-3.day-1 in coastal waters. In the offshore, primary production value is lower, ranged from 0.07 to 30 mgC.m-3. day-1. The studied results argued that ecological conditions in the coastal zone give facility for the process of primary production and phytoplankton development.
