Description: An analytical study of a two-lobed circular arc pressure vessel (double-bubble tank) with a local perturbation from the cylindrical shape was made. It can be concluded that NASTRAN provides a good linear buckling analysis capability for structures that cannot be handled by other analysis techniques. However, solutions are relatively expensive from a computational standpoint. Two worthwhile additions to the NASTRAN program would be the inclusion of a new beam element that adequately represents the shear transfer when modeling stiffeners on a shell and the capability, in a rigid format, to keep certain prescribed loads constant during the eigenvalue extraction process.

Description: The effects of nonlinear damping on the large-deflection response of symmetrically laminated composite panels is studied by time-domain simulation in an attempt to quantify experimentally observed phenomena. A single-mode deflection approach is used in the equations of motion and in the linear and nonlinear damping models. The probability, peak-probability, and spectral-density data are compiled for both strains and deflection. The rms responses as a function of input excitation level are also obtained and compared to linear, equivalent-linearization, and Fokker-Planck equation solutions.

Description: A multilayered finite element with bending-extensional coupling is evaluated for: (1) buckling of general laminated plates; (2) thermal stresses of laminated plates cured at elevated temperatures; (3) displacements of a bimetallic beam; and (4) displacement and stresses of a single-cell box beam with warped cover panels. Also, displacements and stresses for flat and spherical orthotropic and anisotropic segments are compared with results from higher order plate and shell finite-element analyses.

Description: A systematic finite-element model modification technique has been applied to two small problems and a model of the main wing box of a research drone aircraft. The procedure determines the sensitivity of the eigenvalues and eigenvector components to specific structural changes, calculates the required changes and modifies the finite-element model. Good results were obtained where large stiffness modifications were required to satisfy large eigenvalue changes. Sensitivity matrix conditioning problems required the development of techniques to insure existence of a solution and accelerate its convergence. A method is proposed to assist the analyst in selecting stiffness parameters for modification.

Description: Two methods for determining stresses and internal forces in geometrically nonlinear structural analysis are presented. The simplified approach uses the mid-deformed structural position to evaluate strains when rigid body rotation is present. The important feature of this approach is that it can easily be used with a general-purpose finite-element computer program. The refined approach uses element intrinsic or corotational coordinates and a geometric transformation to determine element strains from joint displacements. Results are presented which demonstrate the capabilities of these potentially useful approaches for geometrically nonlinear structural analysis.

Description: Results of a preliminary investigation into a method which can be used to improve the results of an experimental force prediction analysis is presented. The method uses a singular value decomposition technique to reduce measurement noise present in the measured input data matrix. The fundamental theory for the method along with an experimental example is shown. The method is shown to provide encouraging force prediction improvements when the input data matrix contains high levels of measurement noise.

Description: The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a preliminary investigation of an indirect method which can be used to generate a set of equivalent point loads approximating an applied distributed acoustic load. The method combines the source information with the structure's modal characteristics and forces which give the same response as the applied acoustic load. The technique is demonstrated by predicting a set of point forces acting on a thin aluminum panel which simulate a normally-incident random pressure. The technique is verified by comparing measured strain autospectrums with estimated strain autospectrums generated using the predicting forces. Strain errors within 5 dB were achieved. A limited amount of information about the acoustic load could be deduced using the predicted force autospectrums and phase differences between these forces.
