Notes: Equipment has been developed for the recovery of precipitates from rotors of industrial tubular centrifuges. A double piston is described for nonaseptic discharge of precipitates through the outlet holes of the clarifier rotor. For the aseptic resuspension or dissolving of valuable precipitates a closed-circulation system has been developed, which is applied without opening of the clarifier rotor.

Notes: A substrain of Bacillus cereus 569/H produced above 10,000 units of penicillinase/ ml. when grown in a pilot-plant fermentor using a medium containing Casamino acids techn. (Difco) or N-Z-Amine type B (Sheffield), and salts. Simplified purification and concentration procedures give an overall yield of 50-65% enzyme. The freeze-dried enzyme preparation had a good storage stability in vacuumsealed ampules kept at 4, 30, and 37°C. In vials containing air in the head space, partial inactivation occurred in two months at 30 and 37°C. The freezedried preparation showed satisfactory performance in the production of yoghurt fermented milk.

Description: The various regions of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system are coupled by flows of charged particle beams and electromagnetic waves. This coupling gives rise to processes that affect both technical and non-technical aspects of life on Earth. The CRRES Program sponsored experiments which were designed to produce controlled and known input to the space environment and the effects were measured with arrays of diagnostic instruments. Large amounts of material were used to modify and perturb the environment in a controlled manner, and response to this was studied. The CRRES and PEGSAT satellites were dual-mission spacecraft with a NASA mission to perform active chemical-release experiments, grouped into categories of tracer, modification, and simulation experiments. Two sounding rocket chemical release campaigns completed the study.

Description: The origins, development, and logic of the indices are discussed. The relationships of the indices to ground-based measurements of vegetation are highlighted. An effort was made to preserve the order in which the various indices appeared in the literature in order to historically trace their underlying concepts.

Description: A technique for documenting changes in size of NOAA-n pixels in order to calibrate the data for use in performing area calculations is described. Based on Earth-satellite geometry, a function for calculating the effective pixel size, measured in terms of ground area, on any given pixel was derived. The equation is an application of the law of sines plus an arclength formula. Effective pixel dimensions for NOAA 6 and 7 satellites for all pixels between nadir and the extreme view angles are presented. The NOAA 6 data were used to estimate the areas of several lakes, with an accuracy within 5%. Sources of error are discussed.

Description: Grassland is a major component of the earth's available land. The vast area and remoteness of this ecosystem makes it difficult to assess its condition and monitor productivity by traditional methods. Remote sensing potentially offers a rapid nondestructive approach for monitoring such ecosystems. A study was carried out in a tallgrass prairie site near Manhattan, Kansas, during the 1983 and 1984 seasons to investigate the feasibility of estimating light interception and green leaf area index (LAI) from measurements of canopy multispectral reflectance. Greenness (Gn) index was found to be strongly correlated with intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Two methods, a direct regression (RGR) and an indirect approach (IND), were used to estimate LAI from Gn index. The LAI values estimated by RGR method were consistently lower than the measured ones; however, good agreement was obtained between the LAI values estimated by IND method and the measured LAI. This suggests that Gn transformation of canopy spectral reflectance is more closely related to the fraction of intercepted PAR by green foliage than the quantity of green LAI.
