    Notes: The spread and rebound of droplets upon impact on flat surfaces at room temperature were studied over a wide range of impact velocities (0.5-6 m/s), viscosities (1-100 mPa.s), static contact angles (30-120°), droplet sizes (1.5-3.5 mm), and surface roughnesses using a fast-shutter-speed CCD camera. The maximum spread of a droplet upon impact depended strongly on the liquid viscosity and the impact velocity. The tendency of a droplet to deposit or to rebound is determined primarily by the liquid viscosity and the liquid/substrate static contact angle. A model more broadly applicable than existing models was developed to predict maximum spread as a function of the Reynolds number, the Weber number, and the static contact angle. Based on the conservation of energy, a rebound model is proposed that predicts the tendency to rebound as a function of maximum spread and static contact angle.The maximum-spread model prediction agrees to within 10% with more than 90% of the experimental data from different sources. In the current study, the rebound model successfully predicts the tendency of a droplet to rebound.

    Notes: A growth medium was developed for maximal production in batch culture of extracellular xylanase and β-xylosidase by Aspergillus awamori CMI 142717 and a mutant (AANTG 43) derived from the wild-type strain. The optimum pH for the production of xylanase and β-xylosidase was 4.0. The best temperature of xylanase production was 30°C; 35°C was optimal for β-xylosidase. Protease production was never completely suppressed under any of the conditions tested. However, protease titre was 3.5-fold less than the control in medium in which proteose peptone and yeast extract were omitted: the level of xylanase was not affected (8.6 U mL-1) but β-xylosidase titre was increased 4.7-fold to 1.5 U mL-1. When corn steep liquor was used as the sole nitrogen source, xylanse and β-xylosidase titres were further increased by 1.5- and 1.9-fold, respectively. Of the carbon sources investigated, ball-milled oat straw or oat spelt xylan produced the highest titres of xylanse and β-xylosidase. None of the soluble carbon sources investigated produced the high titres of xylanase or β-xylosidase induced by either oat straw for xylanse and β-xylosidase was 2% and the optimum spore inoculum was between 106 and 107 spores/mL-1 final concentration. The level of xylanse activity obtained in the culture filtrates of the mutant was a remarkable 820 U mL-1 when the reducing sugar released was measured by the dinitrosalicylic acid method. This enzyme titre would appear to be the highest reported so far. The xylanases system contained the correct balance of enzymes to effect extensive hydrolysis of oat spelt xylan. The protease titre was very low.

    Notes: Dissolution and crystal growth on the (010) cleavage surface of mineral gypsum have been studied by scanning force microscopy, which allows observation of surfaces while they are in contact with aqueous solutions. Etch pits formed on the (010) surface in contact with solutions undersaturated with respect to gypsum are oriented in relation to the [001] zone axis. Edges parallel to [001] are stable or move only slowly. Edges parallel to [100] and [101] move more rapidly. Crystal growth by migration of step edges is observed in contact with supersaturated solutions. The inhibition of crystal growth by phosphonate produces gross changes in the texture of steps and terraces.

    Notes: A macroscopic model based on the volume-averaged equations of motion is presented for countercurrent gas-liquid flow in a packed bed. The model yields a column-limited flooding point as the loss of existence of uniform states. It correctly predicts the existence of two uniform states below the flooding point. The lower branch corresponds to the trends commonly observed experimentally. It is shown that the upper branch is made unattainable by the gas distributor/support plate at the bottom of the column. The occurrence of premature flooding induced by the support plate is also explained. It is suggested that the occurrence of spontaneous liquid segregation, necessitating frequent liquid redistribution in columns with large dumped packings and porosities, is a consequence of the loss of stability of the uniform state in the lower branch.

    Notes: A macroscopic model of two-phase flow in packed beds, based on the volume-averaged equations of motion for the gas and liquid phases, was analyzed in an attempt to understand the onset and evolution of fully-developed pulsing flow in trickle beds. By assuming that solutions take the form of waves travelling at constant speed, periodic solutions to these equations are found which can be associated with long-time, asymptotic behavior of pulses in a very long bed. Families of one-dimensional waves which exist at a particular set of mass fluxes can be characterized by infinite period bifurcations in the travelling wave frame. We numerically follow these bifurcations as the fluxes are changed, generating bifurcation diagrams for the original model. The results predict that properties of one-dimensional pulses should correlate with the total superficial velocity through the bed. A hysteresis in the trickling-pulsing transition is also predicted.

    Notes: Transport models of diffusion-induced bubble growth and collapse in viscous liquids are developed and evaluated. A rigorous model for these important phenomena is formulated taking into account convective and diffusive mass transport, surface tension, and viscous and inertial effects. Predictions for bubble growth dynamics demonstrate the importance of viscous effects in the liquid surrounding the bubble for a wide range of conditions having relevance to polymer processing operations. It is also shown how previous models employing various approximations can be derived from the rigorous model by using different mathematical methods and dimensional analysis. Predicted bubble growth dynamics from the rigorous and approximate models are compared to establish the ranges of validity for two commonly used approximations. These comparisons indicate that models using a thin boundary-layer approximation have a rather limited range of applicability. A new approximate model, based on a previously published result, gives reasonably accurate bubble growth rate predictions with a significant reduction in computational effort.
