    Notes: Abstract Internal application of millimolar concentrations of calcium to batrachotoxin (BTX)-activated rat skeletal muscle sodium channels, bathed symmetrically in 200 mm NaCl, causes a reduction in apparent singlechannel amplitude without visibly increasing noise at a bandwidth of 50 Hz. A greater calcium-induced reduction occurred upon removal of external sodium ions. Internal calcium acted similarly in high ionic strength solutions (3m NaCl), where surface charges are effectively screened, suggesting that calcium acts, in part, by binding within the pore and occluding the conducting pathway. In low ionic strength solutions (20 mm NaCl), internal addition of N-Methyl-Glucamine (NMG) ions decreased the single channel amplitude consistent with screening of negative surface charges. An accurate description of the dose dependence of calcium inhibition, using either a simple blocking model, or rate theory calculations of ion permeation and block, also required surface charge screening. Hence, our data support the view that sodium current inhibition by internal calcium arises from a combination of both open-channel block and surface charge effects.

    Notes: The prediction of polymer/polymer miscibility is addressed using analog calorimetry and molecular modeling. For each polymer, an analog compound representing one or two repeat units was chosen. Heat-of-mixing was measured for liquid mixtures of analog compounds and then used in a binary interaction model to predict polymer miscibility. Specifically, we have measured exothermic heats-of-mixing for 4-ethyl phenol, an analog of poly(vinly phenol), with several analogs containing ether, ester, or ketone functional groups. The exothermic heat-of-mixing results are consistent with the observed miscibility of poly(vinyl phenol) with polymers containing these functional groups. Using interaction parametes derived from the analog calorimetry in the binary interaction model or using premixes of 4-ethyl phenol in ethyl benzene, we correctly predict the magnitude and relative order of the fraction of vinyl phenol units in copolymers with styrene required for miscibility with poly(methyl methacrylate), polyacetal, and a polyketone. the miscibility trends for poly(vinyl phenol) blends predicted from analog calorimetry and the binary interaction model are in reasonable agreement with those predicted from the association model of Painter and Coleman, despite the different bases of the two approaches. We have used molecular modeling to complement the analog calorimetry and to assess steric effects on hydrogen-bonding ability for models of poly(n-butyl acrylate) and poly(t-butyl acrylate) with phenol. The modeling results suggest that, in some cases, steric effects and the three-dimensional structure of the polymer can significantly influence the hydrogen-bonding ability of polymers relative to their analogs.

    Description: The Lunar Mapping and Modeling Project (LMMP) is managing the development of a suite of lunar mapping and modeling tools and data products that support lunar exploration activities, including the planning, design, development, test, and operations associated with crewed and/or robotic operations on the lunar surface. In addition, LMMP should prove to be a convenient and useful tool for scientific analysis and for education and public outreach (E/PO) activities. LMMP will utilize data predominately from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, but also historical and international lunar mission data (e.g. Lunar Prospector, Clementine, Apollo, Lunar Orbiter, Kaguya, and Chandrayaan-1) as available and appropriate. LMMP will provide such products as image mosaics, DEMs, hazard assessment maps, temperature maps, lighting maps and models, gravity models, and resource maps. We are working closely with the LRO team to prevent duplication of efforts and ensure the highest quality data products. A beta version of the LMMP software was released for limited distribution in December 2009, with the public release of version 1 expected in the Fall of 2010.

    Description: Theoretical and observational progress in studies of Saturn's ring system since the mid-1980s is reviewed, focussing on advances in configuration and dynamics, composition and size distribution, dust and meteoroids, interactions of the rings with the planet and the magnetosphere, and relationships between the rings and various satellites. The Cassini instrument suite of greatest relevance to ring studies is also summarized, emphasizing how the individual instruments might work together to solve outstanding problems. The Cassini tour is described from the standpoint of ring studies, and major ring science goals are summarized.

    Description: The Potassium-Argon Laser Experiment( KArLE), is composed of two main instruments: a spectrometer as part of the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) method and a Mass Spectrometer (MS). The LIBS laser ablates a sample and creates a plasma cloud, generating a pit in the sample. The LIBS plasma is measured for K abundance in weight percent and the released gas is measured using the MS, which calculates Ar abundance in mols. To relate the K and Ar measurements, total mass of the ablated sample is needed but can be difficult to directly measure. Instead, density and volume are used to calculate mass, where density is calculated based on the elemental composition of the rock (from the emission spectrum) and volume is determined by pit morphology. This study aims to reduce the uncertainty for KArLE by analyzing pit volume relationships in several analog materials and comparing methods of pit volume measurements and their associated uncertainties.

    Description: KArLE (Potassium-Argon Laser Experiment) has been developed for in situ planetary geochronology using the K - Ar (potassium-argon) isotope system, where material ablated by LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) is used to calculate isotope abundances. We are determining the accuracy and precision of volume measurements of these pits using stereo and laser microscope data to better understand the ablation process for isotope abundance calculations. If a characteristic volume can be determined with sufficient accuracy and precision for specific rock types, KArLE will prove to be a useful instrument for future planetary rover missions.

    Description: The Constellation program (CxP) has developed a list of 50 sites of interest on the Moon which will be targeted by the LRO narrow angle camera. The list has also been provided to the M~ team to supplement their targeting list. This list does not represent a "site selection" process; rather the goal was to find "representative" sites and terrains to understand the range of possible surface conditions for human lunar exploration to aid engineering design and operational planning. The list compilers leveraged heavily on past site selection work (e.g. Geoscience and a Lunar Base Workshop - 1988, Site Selection Strategy for a Lunar Outpost - 1990, Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) - 2005). Considerations included scientific, resource utilization, and operational merits, and a desire to span lunar terrain types. The targets have been organized into two "tiers" of 25 sites each to provide a relative priority ranking in the event of mutual interference. A LEAG SAT (special action team) was established to validate and recommend modifications to the list. This SAT was chaired by Dr. Paul Lucey. They provided their final results to CxP in May. Dr. Wendell Mendell will organize an on-going analysis of the data as they come down to ensure data quality and determine if and when a site has sufficient data to be retired from the list. The list was compiled using the best available data, however, it is understood that with the flood of new lunar data, minor modifications or adjustments may be required.
