    Description: Entomophthoromycota is one of six major phylogenetic lineages among the former phylum Zygomycota. These early terrestrial fungi share evolutionarily ancestral characters such as coenocytic mycelium and gametangiogamy as a sexual process resulting in zygospore formation. Previous molecular studies have shown the monophyly of Entomophthoromycota, thus justifying raising the taxonomic status of these fungi to a phylum. Multi-gene phylogenies have identified five major lineages of Entomophthoromycota. In this review we provide a detailed discussion about the biology and taxonomy of these lineages: I) Basidiobolus (Basidiobolomycetes: Basidiobolaceae; primarily saprobic); II) Conidiobolus (Entomophthoromycetes, Ancylistaceae; several clades of saprobes and invertebrate pathogens), as well as three rapidly evolving entomopathogenic lineages in the family Entomophthoraceae centering around; III) Batkoa; IV) Entomophthora and allied genera; and V) the subfamily Erynioideae which includes Zoophthora and allied genera. Molecular phylogenic analysis has recently determined the relationships of several taxa that were previously unresolved based on morphology alone: Eryniopsis, Macrobiotophthora, Massospora, Strongwellsea and two as yet undescribed genera of Basidiobolaceae.

    Notes: Enthalpy relaxations in glassy poly(vinyl chloride) following varied pre-aging treatments and under varied aging conditions have been compared through observations of sub-Tg endothermal DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) aging peaks. The extent of enthalpy relaxation for a fixed time and temperature of aging is progressively enhanced by the imposition and release of increasing mechanical stress before aging. The same effect is produced by sorption and desorption of increasing amounts of CO2 or CH3Cl vapor before aging. In contrast, the continued application of mechanical stress, or the presence of vapor, during the aging period suppresses enthalpy relaxation. The extent of suppression increases with increasing vapor pressure and solubility or increasing stress. These effects are interpreted as consequences of an increase in the enthalpy of the polymer under mechanical or sorptive stress and an enthalpy relaxation following the release of this stress. In addition to these effects on the DSC endotherm, a pronounced exotherm between the aging peak and Tg is observed for samples which have undergone shear yielding or orientation either before or during aging. This exotherm may be the result of release of stored strain energy during the DSC scan.

    Notes: The surface composition and energy of carbon fiber has been carefully analyzed and quantified. Untreated, AU, surface-treated, AS, and heat-treated AHT fibers were all studied. AS fiber was surface-treated by an electrolytic oxidation process. AHT fiber was heat-treated at elevated high temperatures under vacuum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) was used to investigate the surface elemental concentration of carbon fibers. The corresponding surface free energies of these fibers were calculated from the contact angles measured by a dynamic contact angle analyzer. Results showed a strong correlation between the surface treatment and heat-treatment history and the surface chemistry of carbon fibers. After oxidation treatment, the surface free energy was increased by adding functional group elements (oxygen and nitrogen). However, these added elements could be removed by high temperature treatment under vacuum. The diffusion of O, N, and Na was discussed. The correlation between oxygen and nitrogen concentration and carbon fiber surface free energy has been plotted. These fibers would be used to quantify the relationship between carbon fiber surface free energy and the interfacial shear strength of the fiber-polymer interface.
