Description: Human primordial germ cells and mouse neonatal and adult germline stem cells are pluripotent and show similar properties to embryonic stem cells. Here we report the successful establishment of human adult germline stem cells derived from spermatogonial cells of adult human testis. Cellular and molecular characterization of these cells revealed many similarities to human embryonic stem cells, and the germline stem cells produced teratomas after transplantation into immunodeficient mice. The human adult germline stem cells differentiated into various types of somatic cells of all three germ layers when grown under conditions used to induce the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells. We conclude that the generation of human adult germline stem cells from testicular biopsies may provide simple and non-controversial access to individual cell-based therapy without the ethical and immunological problems associated with human embryonic stem cells.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Conrad, Sabine -- Renninger, Markus -- Hennenlotter, Jorg -- Wiesner, Tina -- Just, Lothar -- Bonin, Michael -- Aicher, Wilhelm -- Buhring, Hans-Jorg -- Mattheus, Ulrich -- Mack, Andreas -- Wagner, Hans-Joachim -- Minger, Stephen -- Matzkies, Matthias -- Reppel, Michael -- Hescheler, Jurgen -- Sievert, Karl-Dietrich -- Stenzl, Arnulf -- Skutella, Thomas -- England -- Nature. 2008 Nov 20;456(7220):344-9. doi: 10.1038/nature07404. Notes: An innovative idea for the solution of viscous incompressible flows, in which the equation for conservation of mass is satisfied at the element level, is termed the solenoidal finite element approach. The term ‘solenoidal’ derives from the fact that the velocity components need to be solenoidal, i.e. to have zero divergence. The difficulty with this idea centres on the construction of a specialized element in which the velocity components are constrained to be solenoidal by the nature of their interpolation functions. If such an element can be constructed, then the pressure is suppressed from the prime solution. This has obvious attractions, although recourse to another novel idea is needed for its eventual retrieval. The validity of these ideas is demonstrated herein by the results for some classical benchmark problems. Where possible, comparisons are made with other results, both from other codes and from the literature.

Description: During the development of a project to estimate wheat production, it became necessary to pull data, corresponding to particular fields in a test site, off an ERTS computer compatible tape. Aerial photographs and topographic maps were on hand for the test site. A method was devised, using an affine transformation, to relate the aerial photographs or topographic maps to the tapes. One can thereby access data on the tape corresponding to regions covered by only a few pixels. The theory can be used for the registration of two tapes for the same area and for the geometric correction of images.
