    Description: Exploration of available information concerning carbon on the moon, following review of what is known about carbon on the earth, and consideration of the results of studies of meteorites, which have provided the first direct clues about extraterrestrial carbon. Carbon and carbon isotope composition data taken from Apollo 11 samples are tabulated. Carbon compounds produced by pyrolysis, extracted with benzene-methanol, extracted with water, and freed by acid treatment are discussed. Carbon and carbon compounds in lunar rocks and soils appear to be distributed heterogeneously.

    Description: Analyses of two carbonaceous meteorites have provided much of the latest evidence which seems to support Oparin's theory on the origin of life. The meteorites involved are the Murray meteorite, which fell in 1950, and the Murchison meteorite, which fell in 1969. The amino acids in the two meteorites are similar in composition. Eight of the twenty amino acids found belong to amino acids present in proteins. A number of monocarboxylic and dicarboxylic fatty acids were also found in the meteorites.

    Description: The origin of life on earth is examined from a viewpoint stressing the validity of the concept of chemical evolution. The different geological formations supporting the mechanisms of the theory are described; the stage of chemical evolution (preceding that of biological evolution) would have taken place from the time of the origin of the earth and meteorites, 4.6 billion years ago, to the early Precambrian period, about 3.2 billion years ago. Specific aspects of the problem discussed include amino acids from spark discharges and their comparison with the Murchison meteorite amino acids, the properties and theory of genesis of the carbonaceous complex within the cold Bokevelt meteorite, ammonion ion concentration in the primitive ocean, the oxygen isotope chemistry of ancient charts, the origin and rise of oxygen concentration in the earth's atmosphere, Precambrian microorganisms and evolutionary events prior to the origin of vascular plants, and biogenicity and significance of the oldest known stromatolites.

    Description: Criteria to determine the mode of origin of amino acids can be established by consideration of their structure, enantiometric distribution, composition, and relative abundance. A population of dominantly protein amino acids with one enantiomeric configuration most likely had a biological origin. Biological amino acids do racemize, however, so the absence of optical activity would not rule out the possibility that the amino acids in a racemic mixture were originally synthesized biologically. For racemic amino acids, therefore, structure, composition and relative abundance become important in ascertaining the origin of these compounds. Abiotically synthesized amino acids have a population composed of both protein and nonprotein structures present as racemic mixtures.
