Structure Elucidation of a Double-Stranded Polymer by Using Model StudiesSyntheses and complete structural characterization (including constitution, configuration, conformation) of the double-stranded compounds Ua-5b, Ss-5b, U-7b, S-7b, UUa-8, SUs-8, UUUaa-9, USUas-9, SUUsa-9, and SSuss-9 are described. These compounds contain up to three repeating units of the ladder polymer 3 and are therefore used as model compounds to elucidate interesting structural aspects of this polymer. A model for the spherical shape of 3 is presented. The molecular structures in the crystals of S-7b, SUs-8, Ua-5b have been determined.
