Notes: Polycrystalline tin oxide surfaces have been examined before and after reduction in 40 Torr of CO at 100 and 175°C using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), ion-scattering spectroscopy (ISS) and electron-stimulated desorption (ESD). The changes in the surface composition and chemical states of the surface species generally are subtle for the reductive conditions used. Some of the SnO2 is reduced to SnO and significant changes do occur with regard to the amounts and chemical forms of the hydrogen-containing species remaining after both the 100 and 175°C reductions.

Notes: A source that is compact, durable and mounts on a standard standard ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) flange has been developed for the generation of hyperthermal oxygen atoms. In this source oxygen atoms permeate through an Ag membrane held at 500°C and are then emitted toward the target from the vacuum side of the membrane by electron-stimulated desorption. The current prototype model generates useable O-atom fluxes of ∼1012 atoms cm-2 s-1, and future modifications should increase this flux by 1-3 orders of magnitude. Based on the O+ energy distribution, the average O neutral energy is ∼5 eV with a fairly broad distribution (full width at half-maximum ∼3.6 eV). The information required for the development of this source and the design of the source are prsented.

Description: Ion scattering spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis have been used to examine a platinized tin oxide catalyst surface before, during, and after reduction by annealing under vacuum at 250 to 450 C. These techniques were then used to examine the reduced surface after a room-temperature, low-pressure oxygen exposure. The spectral results and the behavior of the reduced surface toward oxygen exposure both indicate that a Pt/Sn alloy is produced during reduction.

Description: A vacuum compatible hyperthermal atom generator includes a membrane having two sides. the membrane having the capability of dissolving atoms into the membrane's bulk. A first housing is furnished in operative association with the first side of the membrane to provide for the exposure of the first side of the membrane to a gas species. A second housing is furnished in operative association with the second side of the membrane to provide a vacuum environment having a pressure of less than 1 x 10(exp -3) Torr on the second side of the membrane. Exciting means excites atoms adsorbed on the second side of the membrane to a non-binding state so that a portion from 0% to 100% of atoms adsorbed on the second side of is the membrane are released from the second side of the membrane primarily as an atom beam.
