    Notes: Studies were made of the thermal softening and degradation behavior in air of low- and high-density polyethylene (PE) grafted with acrylonitrile (AN) by electron beam prior irradiation in nitrogen. It was found that both LDPE and HDPE were made to exhibit higher softening points by grafting and that this tendency increased with increasing percent graft. The starting temperatures of the thermal degradation and thermogravimetric curves were also found to shift to higher temperatures. On the other hand, in marked contrast to the thermal softening and degradation behavior of grafted PE in air, its behavior in nitrogen showed substantial dependance on oxidative degradation, suggesting that the oxidation of PE was inhibited by polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which forms graft chains. It was considered that the oxidation-inhibiting mechanism of PAN produced in the amorphous regions prevents oxygen from dissolving and diffusing into the amorphous phase, thus inhibiting the oxidative degradation of PE, and that, when heated, PAN undergoes nitrile oligomerization and the nitrile oligomer end radicals act to trap those radicals which participate in PE oxidative degradation.

    Notes: Polymer films were deposited from the plasma polymerization of the mixtures of hydrocarbons, ethane, ethylene, and acetylene, and tetrafluoromethane (CF4) or hexafluoroacetone (HFA). The surface properties, the advancing contact angle of water, and surface energy of the films deposited and the chemical composition at the outermost layer of the films are discussed from the data of the angular XPS measurements. The plasma polymers deposited from the CF4/hydrocarbon and HFA/hydrocarbon mixtures contained fluorine atoms whose content depended on the CF4 or HFA concentration of the mixtures. The hydrophobicity of the films deposited could not be determined by the fluorine content of the films but by the chemical composition of the fluorine moieties at the outermost layer of the films. The CF3 moieties rather than the CF2 and CF moieties contribute largely to the hydrophobicity of the films. The plasma polymer films deposited from the HFA/acetylene (87.5 mol % HFA) showed higher hydrophobicity (the surface energy is 9.7 mJ/m2) than those from the CF4/acetylene mixture (87.5 mol % CF4) (the surface energy is 13 mJ/m2).

    Notes: Low- and high-density polyethylene (PE) films were grafted with acrylonitrile (AN) by electron beam prior to irradiation. The distribution of graft chains over the cross section of the sample film was analyzed in terms of the distribution of nitrogen atoms contained in the AN by means of an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), and graft sites were studied in relation to the effect of grafting temperature on the percent graft and the oxygen permeability of the sample films. It was found that diffusion of AN into the film was the rate-limiting step in the grafting process, thus restricting the grafting to the surface of the film in the initial grafting stages. However, the grafting shifted to the center of film as the graft process proceeded, until a uniform distribution of graft chains was observed across the entire film thickness. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) was found to display a higher percent graft than did low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and percent graft tended to increase with increasing grafting temperature. On the other hand, film oxygen permeability decreased with increasing percent graft, but this decreasing trend decreased with increasing percent graft. These findings suggest that the grafting is initiated by radicals trapped in the amorphous phase near the crystalline regions and at the surface of crystallites and that graft chains grow toward the amorphous regions. As for the radicals contributing to graft polymerization, it appears that AN permeates deeper near the crystalline surface and that graft chains grow from these sites.

    Description: We present the 3-8 kiloelectronvolts and 8-24 kiloelectronvolts number counts of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) identified in the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) extragalactic surveys. NuSTAR has now resolved 33 percent -39 percent of the X-ray background in the 8-24 kiloelectronvolts band, directly identifying AGNs with obscuring columns up to approximately 10 (exp 25) per square centimeter. In the softer 3-8 kiloelectronvolts band the number counts are in general agreement with those measured by XMM-Newton and Chandra over the flux range 5 times 10 (exp -15) less than or approximately equal to S (3-8 kiloelectronvolts) divided by ergs per second per square centimeter less than or approximately equal to 10 (exp -12) probed by NuSTAR. In the hard 8-24 kiloelectronvolts band NuSTAR probes fluxes over the range 2 times 10 (exp -14) less than or approximately equal to S (8-24 kiloelectronvolts) divided by ergs per second per square centimeter less than or approximately equal to 10 (exp -12), a factor approximately 100 times fainter than previous measurements. The 8-24 kiloelectronvolts number counts match predictions from AGN population synthesis models, directly confirming the existence of a population of obscured and/or hard X-ray sources inferred from the shape of the integrated cosmic X-ray background. The measured NuSTAR counts lie significantly above simple extrapolation with a Euclidian slope to low flux of the Swift/BAT15-55 kiloelectronvolts number counts measured at higher fluxes (S (15-55 kiloelectronvolts) less than or approximately equal to 10 (exp -11) ergs per second per square centimeter), reflecting the evolution of the AGN population between the Swift/BAT local (redshift is less than 0.1) sample and NuSTAR's redshift approximately equal to 1 sample. CXB (Cosmic X-ray Background) synthesis models, which account for AGN evolution, lie above the Swift/BAT measurements, suggesting that they do not fully capture the evolution of obscured AGNs at low redshifts

    Description: We report the first hard X-ray observations with NuSTAR of the BL Lac-type blazar PKS2155-304, augmented with soft X-ray data from XMM-Newton and gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope, obtained in 2013April when the source was in a very low flux state. A joint NuSTAR and XMM spectrum, covering the energy range 0.5-60 keV, is best described by a model consisting of a log-parabola component with curvature Beta = -0.3(+0.2 -0.1) and a (local) photon index 3.04 +/- 0.15 at photon energy of 2 keV, and a hard power-law tail with photon index 2.2 +/- 0.4. The hard X-ray tail can be smoothly joined to the quasi-simultaneous gamma-ray spectrum by a synchrotron self-Compton component produced by an electron distribution with index p 2.2. Assuming that the power-law electron distribution extends down to gamma (sub min) = 1 and that there is one proton per electron, an unrealistically high total jet power of Lp approximately 10 (exp 47) erg s(sub -1) is inferred. This can be reduced by two orders of magnitude either by considering a significant presence of electron-positron pairs with lepton-to-proton ratio n(sub e+e-/n(sub p) approx. 30, or by introducing an additional, low-energy break in the electron energy distribution at the electron Lorentz factor gamma br1 approx. 100. In either case, the jet composition is expected to be strongly matter-dominated

    Description: Asymmetry is required by most numerical simulations of stellar core collapse explosions, however the nature differs significantly among models. The spatial distribution of radioactive Ti-44, synthesized in an exploding star near the boundary between material falling back onto the collapsing core and that ejected into the surrounding medium, directly probes the explosion1asymmetries. Cassiopeia A is a young, nearby, core-collapse remnant from which Ti-44 emission has previously been detected, but not imaged. Asymmetries in the explosion have been indirectly inferred from a high ratio of observed Ti-44 emission to that estimated from (56)Ni9, from optical light echoes, and by jet-like features seen in the X-ray and optical ejecta. Here we report on the spatial maps and spectral properties of Ti-44 in Cassiopeia A. We find the Ti-44 to be distributed non-uniformly in the un-shocked interior of the remnant. This may explain the unexpected lack of correlation between the Ti-44 and iron X-ray emission, the latter only being visible in shock heated material. The observed spatial distribution rules out symmetric explosions even with a high level of convective mixing, as well as highly asymmetric bipolar explosions resulting from a fast rotating progenitor. Instead, these observations provide strong evidence for the development of low-mode convective instabilities in core-collapse supernovae.

    Description: We present NuSTAR hard X-ray observations of Sh 2-104, a compact H II region containing several young massive stellar clusters (YMSCs). We have detected distinct hard X-ray sources coincident with localized VERITAS TeV emission recently resolved from the giant gamma-ray complex MGRO J2019+37 in the Cygnus region. Fainter, diffuse X-rays coincident with the eastern YMSC in Sh2-104 likely result from the colliding winds of a component star. Just outside the radio shell of Sh 2-104 lies 3XMM J201744.7+365045 and a nearby nebula, NuSTAR J201744.3+364812, whose properties are most consistent with extragalactic objects. The combined XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectrum of 3XMM J201744.7+365045 is well-fit to an absorbed power-law model with N(sub H) = (3.1 +/- 1.0) x 10(exp 22) cm(exp -2) and a photon index gamma = 2.1 +/- 0.1. Based on possible long-term flux variation and the lack of detected pulsations (less than or equal to 43% modulation), this object is likely a background active galactic nucleus rather than a Galactic pulsar. The spectrum of the NuSTAR nebula shows evidence of an emission line at E = 5.6 keV, suggesting an optically obscured galaxy cluster at z = 0.19 +/- 0.02 (d = 800 Mpc) and L(sub X) = 1.2 x 10(exp 44) erg s(exp -1). Follow-up Chandra observations of Sh 2-104 will help identify the nature of the X-ray sources and their relation to MGRO J2019+37. We also show that the putative VERITAS excess south of Sh 2-104, is most likely associated with the newly discovered Fermi pulsar PSR J2017+3625 and not the H II region.
