Notes: A generalized non-muffin-tin band structure method is presented in the context of multiple scattering off of the Wigner-Seitz cell. This technique has the following desirable features: it is formally exact and rapidly convergent; it preserves the separation between the nondiagonal scattering matrix for the cell and the usual structure constants of KKR in the secular determinant; it produces an accurate representation of the wave function throughout the sphere bounding the Wigner-Seitz cell and hence is suitable for self-consistent field calculations and applications that require a detailed knowledge of the unperturbed crystal potential and wave functions. Various aspects of the application of this theory to the empty lattice and sodium are presented, and its limitations discussed. Some future lines of research are briefly reviewed.

Notes: The quality of large semiconductor crystals grown from the melt for use in electronic and optoelectronic devices is strongly influenced by the intricate coupling of heat and mass transfer and melt flow in growth systems. This paper reviews the present state of understanding of these processes starting from the simplest descriptions of solidification processes to detailed numerical calculations needed for quantitative modeling of processing with solidification. Descriptions of models for the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger and Czochralski crystal growth techniques are included as examples of the level of understanding of industrially important methods.

Notes: An approximate numerical method of solving the Generalized Master Equation for a many-body problem is presented, with examples of its application. This method involves the construction from the full Hamiltonian (of the system plus the “bath”) of a set of unitary Langevin equations that combine deterministic microcanonical, stochastic canonical (heat bath), and stochastic nonthermal dynamics in a single time-integration scheme. If implemented in a representation that captures the essential physics and repeatedly run from a given initial condition, this method evaluates stochastic representatives from the actual fiber bundle of system worldlines that flow from the initial condition and, hence, numerically evaluates the path integral. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: Herein we report on a preliminary study to assess the use of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for the direct detection and spectroscopic characterization of exoplanets and debris disks - an application for which HST was not originally designed. Coronagraphic advances may enable the design of a science instrument that could achieve limiting contrasts approx.10deg beyond 275 milli-arcseconds (4 lambda/D at 800 nm) inner working angle, thereby enabling detection and characterization of several known jovian planets and imaging of debris disks. Advantages of using HST are that it already exists in orbit, it's primary mirror is thermally stable and it is the most characterized space telescope yet flown. However there is drift of the HST telescope, likely due to thermal effects crossing the terminator. The drift, however, is well characterized and consists of a larger deterministic components and a smaller stochastic component. It is the effect of this drift versus the sensing and control bandwidth of the instrument that would likely limit HST coronagraphic performance. Herein we discuss the science case, quantifY the limiting factors and assess the feasibility of using HST for exoplanet discovery using a hypothetical new instrument. Description: The Sub-scale Beryllium Mirror Demonstrator that was successfully tested to demonstrate cryogenic figuring of a bare mirror has been coated with a protected gold reflective surface and retested at cryogenic temperatures. Results showing less than 9 nm rms surface distortion attributable to the added coating are presented.
