    Description: We present the infrared spectrum of the zodiacal light and emission obtained by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS) and Mid-Infrared Spectrometer (MIRS) onboard the Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS). The wavelength coverages and spectral resolutions are 1.4-4.0 microns and 0.12 microns for the NIRS, and 4.5-11.7 microns and 0.23-0.36 microns for the MIRS respectively. Both instruments have the same beam size of 8 arcminutes square. The IRTS observations were made for 1995 March 29 - April 26. Here we present the data of two days, April 19 and April 20.

    Description: The evolution of quantitative models of the trapped radiation belts is traced to show how the knowledge of the various features has developed, or been clarified, by performing the required analysis and synthesis. The Starfish electron injection introduced problems in the time behavior of the inner zone, but this residue decayed away, and a good model of this depletion now exists. The outer zone electrons were handled statistically by a log normal distribution such that above 5 Earth radii there are no long term changes over the solar cycle. The transition region between the two zones presents the most difficulty, therefore the behavior of individual substorms as well as long term changes must be studied. The latest corrections to the electron environment based on new data are outlined. The proton models have evolved to the point where the solar cycle effect at low altitudes is included. Trends for new models are discussed; the feasibility of predicting substorm injections and solar wind high-speed streams make the modeling of individual events a topical activity.

    Description: The International Focusing Optics Collaboration for micron Crab Sensitivity (InFOC micronS) balloon-borne hard x-ray incorporates graded multilayer technology to obtain significant effective area at energies previously inaccessible to x-ray optics. The telescope mirror consists of 2040 segmented thin aluminum foils coated with replicated Pt/C multilayers. A sample of these foils was scanned using a pencil-beam reflectometer to determine, multilayer quality. The results of the reflectometer measurements demonstrate our capability to produce large quantity of foils while maintaining high-quality multilayers with a mean Nevot-Croce interface roughness of 0.5nm. We characterize the performance of the complete InFOC micronS telescope with a pencil beam raster scan to determine the effective area and encircled energy function of the telescope. The effective area of the complete telescope is 78, 42 and 22 square centimeters at 20 30 and 40 keV. respectively. The measured encircled energy fraction of the mirror has a half-power diameter of 2.0 plus or minus 0.5 arcmin (90% confidence). The mirror successfully obtained an image of the accreting black hole Cygnus X-1 during a balloon flight in July, 2001. The successful completion and flight test of this telescope demonstrates that graded-multilayer telescopes can be manufactured with high reliability for future x-ray telescope missions such as Constellation-X.

    Description: The storm time intensity variations of ELF electromagnetic emissions have been studied by using the Ogo 6 search coil magnetometer. Low-latitude signals exhibit a sharp low-frequency cutoff and are identified as plasmaspheric hiss. Such waves show pronounced intensification during the recovery phase of magnetic storms but remain close to background levels during the storm main phase. This behavior is consistent with cyclotron resonant generation within the plasmasphere as the latter expands into the intensified belt of outer zone electrons during the storm recovery.

    Description: Simultaneous observations of ELF hiss amplitude and plasma density on Ogo 5 have been investigated. Passes through the region of variable plasma density in the outer plasmasphere have yielded a quantitative relation between the hiss amplitude, the plasma density, and the plasma density corresponding to the threshold of wave detection. It is suggested that this dependence of wave amplitude on plasma density is a source effect and is related to the wave-particle interaction in the outer plasmasphere that gives rise to hiss.

    Description: A summary and intercomparison of recent inner radiation zone electron data are presented. The morphology of the inner radiation zone is described and the data compared with the current generation of inner zone trapped electron models. An analytic representation of the inner zone equatorial pitch angle distribution is presented. This model was based upon data from eight satellites and was used to reduce all data to the form of equatorial flux. Although no Starfish-free high energy electron measurements were available from the inner portion of the inner radiation zone, it was found that the AE-6 model provided a good description of the present solar maximum environment.

    Description: The low-frequency narrow hiss bands associated with plasma-density enhancements in the magnetosphere near and beyond L = 4 have been studied with the search coil magnetometer and ion mass spectrometer data from OGO 5. ELF hiss is found to accompany most of the detached plasmas in the outer magnetosphere and to be sharply limited by the steep ion-density gradient at their boundary. The observations indicate that the hiss originates in and is ducted by the plasma-density enhancements. In a particularly favorable case after an interval of low AE and Dst indices, a series of enhanced plasma-density peaks was observed between L = 4 and L = 6 in the afternoon local-time sector. In this case, it was possible to develop an empirical relation among hiss amplitude, plasma density, and L by using in situ simultaneous measurements.

    Description: A model of the near-earth environment to obtain a best estimate of the average flux of protons and electrons in the energy range from 0.1 to 100 keV for the International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE)-A and -B spacecraft. The possible radiation damage to the thermal coating on these spinning spacecraft is also studied. Applications of the model to other high-altitude satellites can be obtained with the appropriate orbit averaging. This study is the first attempt to synthesize an overall quantitative environment of low-energy particles for high altitude spacecraft, using data from in situ measurements.
