    Description: The Tethered Satellite System (TSS) program was designed to provide a unique opportunity to explore certain space plasma-electrodynamic processes and the orbital mechanics of a gravity-gradient stabilized system of two satellites linked by a long conducting tether. A unique data set was obtained during deployment which has allowed significant science to be accomplished. This paper focuses on results from the TSS-1R mission that are most important to the future technological applications of electrodynamic tethers in space, in particular, the current collection process. Of particular significance is an apparent transition of the physics of current collection when the potential of the collecting body becomes greater than the ram energy of the ionospheric atomic oxygen ions. Previous theoretical models of current collection were electrostatic, assuming that the orbital motion of the system, which is highly subsonic with respect to electron thermal motion, was unimportant. This may still be acceptable for the case of relatively slow-moving sounding rockets. However, the TSS-1R results show that motion relative to the plasma must be accounted for in orbiting systems.

    Description: Differential measurements of ion flow direction and energy during the third Space Shuttle mission have revealed the existence of ion streams in the near vicinity of the Orbiter at angles of attack as great as 50 deg with respect to the ram direction and typically with 10 percent of the ram current intensity. Neither the source nor the mechanism by which these secondary ion streams were created are known at present; however, it is reasonably certain that they are not of geophysical origin, but result from the interaction of the Orbiter with its environmental ionospheric plasma. The energy of the secondary streams was observed to be very close to the ion ram energy, and they were therefore not detected by a standard planar Retarding Potential Analyzer instrument. This leaves open the question as to their existence in the vicinity of orbiting spacecraft in general. Possible connections between secondary ion streams and phenomena previously observed in the vicinity of ionospheric spacecraft are mentioned.

    Description: The angular distributions of ions in the wake of a body moving through a space plasma computed from three different models are compared in order to investigate wake current depletion ratios under conditions simulating the topside ionosphere and plasmasphere. Results demonstrate the importance of taking into account the thermal flux at low Mach numbers and the angular acceptance of ion detectors in making theory-experiment comparisons. For all models considered, gradients in the angular variations of the fluxes are shown to be steeper near the wake-ambient interface than closer to the maximum rarefaction region.
