Notes: Abstract The efficiency of a part feeding and orienting device such as a vibratory bowl is largely governed by some fore-knowledge of the probabilities of the various feasible natural resting aspects of the part. Classical algorithms, such as the energy barrier method, have been proposed to determine these probabilities. In this paper, the authors propose an alternative hypothesis based on the concept of a centroid solid angle. The hypothesis makes use of the geometry of the part to predict the probabilities of its feasible natural resting aspects. In particular, this paper focuses on the case of parts with curved surfaces, such as cylinders. The predictions of the hypothesis were compared with the empirical results of the authors and those obtained by Boothroyd and associates. In both cases, the theoretical values were found to have a mean deviation of about 2.6% compared to the authors' empirical results, and about 1.6% compared to Boothroyd's.
