    Notes: Abstract Traditional hay-meadows in the Alps and fens at the edge of the Alps are habitats for many rare and endangered butterfly species. Conservation efforts aim at preserving these species, but the biotopes depend on regular mowing, which in turn requires intensive financial support. The feasibility of substituting mowing of these sites by grazing is discussed and considered as a more cost effective management type which produces agriculturally valuable goods as well. In this study the butterfly fauna of mown and grazed sites were compared. Species composition, species number, and the occurrence of rare species under the two management types were in most cases rather similar for both grassland ecosystems. Nevertheless, there are hints that for single rare species this might not be true. Additionally, at one site, grazing intensity on a former hay-meadow was too high to preserve the species-rich community. Overall the results are encouraging: grazing does not have to be as detrimental as formerly thought, although details (compartments of pastures, intensity) still have to be confirmed. Experimental grazing management of aban-doned grasslands of the studied types should be started.

    Notes: Abstract The neutral glycosphingolipid fraction from adults of the pig parasitic nematode, Ascaris suum, was resolved into four components on thin-layer chromatography. The high-performance liquid chromatography-isolated components were structurally analysed by: methylation analysis; exoglycosidase cleavage; gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry; liquid secondary-ion mass spectrometry; and, in particular, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Their chemical structures were determined as: Glc(β1-1)ceramide, Man(β1-4)Glc(β1-1)ceramide, GlcNAc(β1-3)Man(β1-4)Glc(β1-1)ceramide and Gal(α1-3)GalNAc(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)Man(β1-4)Glc(β1-1)ceramide; and were characterized as belonging to the arthro-series of protostomial glycosphingolipids. No glycosphingolipid component corresponding to ceramide tetrasaccharide was detected during these analyses. The ceramide composition of the parent glycosphingolipids was dominated by the 2-(R)-hydroxy C24:0 fatty acid, cerebronic acid, and C17 sphingoid-bases: 15-methylhexadecasphing-4-enine and 15-methylhexadecaphinganine in approximately equal proportions. The component ceramide monohexoside was characterized by an additional 15-methylhexadecaphytosphingosine.     Notes: Reaction of gluconolactone 2 with allylmagnesium bromide at low temperatures afforded ketopyranose 3, which could easily be converted into open-chain ketoses (R)-6 and (S)-6. Their reaction with lithioacetylide 9 afforded propargylic alcohol derivatives (R)-10 and (S)-10, which could not be cyclized directly to the desired C-ketosides. They were converted by standard procedures into (R)-14 and (S)-14 and then into dicobalthexacarbonyl complexes (R)-16 and (S)-16. A facile acid-catalyzed ring closure gave the desired C-ketosides (R)-18 α/β and (S)-18α/β, respectively, in different ratios. In order to demonstrate that removal of the protective groups and hydrogenation of the CC triple bond proceed smoothly, (R)-18 α was transformed into the deprotected target molecule (R)-1 α. For the assignment of the new chiral centers at C-2/2′ and at C-8, (S)-18α was transformed into azido derivative (S)-22α, which underwent intramolecular cycloaddition to afford the spiro derivative (S)-25α. Because of the conformational constraints in this molecule, unequivocal configurational assignment was possible with the help of NMR data.

    Notes: Chiral carbene complexes [Cp(CO)2Mn=C(OR*)Ph] (4a-e) were prepared by reaction of [Cp(CO)2Mn=C(OAc)Ph] (2) with HOR* [HOR* = 1,2:3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-D-galactopyranose (3a), 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-D-galactopyranose (3b), 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-D-glucopyranose (3c), (S)- (3d) and (R)-1,2-O-isopropylideneglycerol (3e)]. The replacement of a CO ligand with PTol3 in 4a-e proceeded diastereoselectively to give [Cp(CO)(PTol3)Mn=C(OR*)Ph] (5a-e). The diastereoselectivity increased in the order a, b, c, d: de = 8% (5a), 33% (5b), 70% (5c), 〉 96% (5d). For (R)-5d the isomer with the (S) configuration at manganese (SMn) was formed predominantly. For (S)-5d, only (RMn,S)-5d was detected (de 〉 96%). Photolysis of (R)-4d in the presence of phosphites or phosphanes afforded (SMn)-[Cp(CO)(PR3)Mn=C(OR*)Ph] [PR3 = P(OPh)3 (8), P(OMe)3 (9), P(OMe)2Ph (10), P(OMe)Ph2 (11), PPh3 (12), P(C6H4Cl-p)3 (13)] with a de 〉 96%. Photolysis of (S)-4d in the presence of P(OMe)3 gave (RMn,S)-9. Complex (R)-14 [related to (R)-4d] was obtained from [Cp(CO)2Mn=C(OAc)Tol-p] and 3d. Replacement of CO by PR3 in (R)-14 gave (SMn,R)-[Cp(CO)(PR3)Mn=C(OR*)Tol-p] [R = Tol-p (15), OMe (16), C6H4Cl-p (17)] with a de 〉 96%. In solution, the PTol3-substituted complex 5d is configurationally stable whereas the P(OMe)3 complex 9 epimerizes slowly at room temperature in CH2Cl2, Et2O, and THF within about one week.

    Notes: Water mobility in an acid Nafion® membrane containing ca. 15% water by weight has been studied by high-resolution neutron quasielastic scattering (NQES). The data are analyzed in terms of simple models. On a scale of ca. 10 Å, the water molecules move practically as freely as in bulk water, but their long-range motion is much more hindered. These results are important for an understanding of the relation between the microstructure and the macroscopic properties of these membranes. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed NQES study of the water-polymer interaction problem.

    Description: Salinity variance dissipation is related to exchange flow through the salinity variance balance equation, and meanwhile its magnitude is also proportional to the turbulence production and stratification inside the estuary. As river flow increases, estuarine volume-integrated salinity variance dissipation increases owing to more variance input from the open boundaries driven by exchange flow and river flow. This corresponds to the increased efficient conversion of turbulence production to salinity variance dissipation due to the intensified stratification with higher river flow. Through the spring–neap cycle, the temporal variation of salinity variance dissipation is more dependent on stratification than turbulence production, so it reaches its maximum during the transition from neap to spring tides. During most of the transition time from spring to neap tides, the advective input of salinity variance from the open boundaries is larger than dissipation, resulting in the net increase of variance, which is mainly expressed as vertical variance, that is, stratification. The intensified stratification in turn increases salinity variance dissipation. During neap tides, a large amount of enhanced salinity variance dissipation is induced by the internal shear stress near the halocline. During most of the transition time from neap to spring tides, dissipation becomes larger than the advective input, so salinity variance decreases and the stratification is destroyed.
