Notes: Summary Polyclonal antibodies against native human typeV collagen were produced in rabbits and goats. Following purification, crossreaction of the antibodies with highly immunogenic peptides of basement membranes or the interstitial matrix was excluded on the basis of sensitive radioimmunoassays. These antibodies, when applied to cryostat sections of human oral mucosa, liver and arterial walls, never stained basement membranes as did antibodies against type-IV collagen or laminin. On the contrary, we observed delicate arborizing fibers in the interstitial compartment with extensions contacting structures such as subepidermal basement membranes. Arterioles contained a unilamellar sheath of longitudinally oriented fibers limited to the intimal layer. Larger arteries exhibited a multilamellar fibrous fluorescence over the whole intima, whereas the media showed a much weaker staining. The data identified type-V collagen as an interstitial fibrillar collagen rather than a basement membrane collagen, with a tissue pattern completely different from that of collagens types I, III, VI or fibronectin. A reinterpretation of the role of type-V collagen in connective tissue function is warranted.

Description / Table of Contents: Complexes with N,N,N′,N′-Tetrakis(2-hydroxybenzyl)ethylenediamine (H4tben). Crystal Structure of Ti(tben)The complexes of N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-ethylenediamine with titanium(IV), vanadium(IV), manganese(IV), and tin(IV) were synthesized and characterized by mass spectrometry. The Mössbauer date were evaluated for the tin compound. The molecular structure of the titanium(IV) complex was determined by X-ray structural analysis, crystallographic data see “Inhaltsübersicht”.

Description: A technique for investigating the stability and damping present in centrally preloaded radially symmetric multi-mass flexible rotor bearing systems is presented. In general, one needs to find the eigenvalues of the linearized perturbation equations, though zero frequency stability maps may be found by solving as many simultaneous non-linear equations as there are dampers; and in the case of a single damper, such maps may be found directly, regardless of the number of degrees of freedom. The technique is illustrated for a simple symmetric four degree of freedom flexible rotor with an unpressurized damper. This example shows that whereas zero frequency stability maps are likely to prove to be a simple way to delineate multiple solution possibilities, they do not provide full stability information. Further, particularly for low bearing parameters, the introduction of an unpressurized squeeze film damper may promote instability in an otherwise stable system.

Description: To improve the damping capability of squeeze film dampers, oil hole feed rather than circumferential groove feed is a practical proposition. However, circular orbit response can no longer be assumed, significantly complicating the design analysis. This paper details a feasible transient solution procedure for such dampers, with particular emphasis on the additional difficulties due to the introduction of oil holes. It is shown how a cosine power series solution may be utilized to evaluate the oil hole pressure contributions, enabling appropriate tabular data to be compiled. The solution procedure is shown to be applicable even in the presence of flow restrictors, albeit at the expense of introducing an iteration at each time step. Though not of primary interest, the procedure is also applicable to dynamically loaded journal bearings with oil hole feed.
