    Description: Además de sus conocidos aportes a la geología, la paleontología y la biogeografía de ecosistemas terrestres de la región pampeana y la Patagonia (Argentina), Darwin realizó notables y poco difundidas contribuciones al conocimiento de los ambientes marinos costeros del actual territorio argentino y de los organismos que habitan en ellos. La intimidad de Darwin con el mar se advierte en toda su obra: en el Viaje y en el Origen igual que en numerosos trabajos de investigación realizados y publicados a su regreso a Inglaterra. Entre 1846 y 1854 dio a conocer una extensa obra sobre cirrípedos o cirripedios, que sentó las bases del estudio de esos crustáceos y, aún hoy, es bibliografía obligada de los taxónomos. Su trabajo sobre la estructura y distribución de los arrecifes coralinos de 1842, es considerado un documento fundacional del conocimiento sobre el origen de los atolones. Los moluscos fueron igualmente objeto de publicaciones y cartas entre 1848 y 1871. La difundida imagen de Darwin sentado ante un escritorio escribiendo sus libros lleva a olvidar que pasaba también mucho tiempo con el microscopio. En el Viaje del Beagle incluyó párrafos sobre aves marinas, lo mismo que sobre briozoos o briozoarios, y en El origen, explicó sus pensamientos acerca de la migración de los ojos en los lenguados. Dedicó especial atención a las algas gigantes o sargazos marinos de Tierra del Fuego (donde se los conoce por cachiyuyos). Se incluyen los siguientes trabajos de divulgación científica -Darwin y los briozoos; -Darwin y el desarrollo larval de crustáceos; -Sobre Cirripedios; De Darwin a los acelerómetros; -Los peces de cara torcida; -La incursión en la costa sur de Buenos Aires.

    Description: Esta serie tiene como propósito mostrar diferentes expresiones artísticas relacionadas con la Ictiología nacional, generadas en diferentes épocas y que surgen por diversas motivaciones personales que, en algún caso, muestran casi con exactitud a los modelos que inspiraron la obra, en otras, por lo contrario, responden a la imaginación y creatividad del autor.Nuestra primera contribución toma una imagen del artista Cándido López, quién a través de sus pinturas, de alguna manera , fuera un “corresponsal de guerra” de la fratricida Guerra de la Triple Alianza.En este caso contamos con la colaboración de la joven artista plástica Jimena López Miquelarena, quién aportó sus conocimientos sobre el tema central de esta serie.Sólo me resta invitar a quienes quieran sumarse a esta iniciativa, se acerquen con sus aportes para consolidar esta idea, ya que podría ser otro instrumento de difusión del conocimiento de nuestra disciplina a los diferentes estamentos de la sociedad.

    Description: En esta serie se mencionan a todos aquellos que, a través de sus pequeños o grandes aportes, contribuyeron a la consolidación de la disciplina en nuestro país.El plan general de esta contribución consiste en la elaboración de fichas individuales que contengan una lista de trabajos de los diferentes autores, acompañadas por bibliografía de referencia y, cuando ello fuera posible, por imágenes personales y material adicional.Se tratará de guardar un orden cronológico, pero esto no es excluyente, ya que priorizaremos las sucesivas ediciones al material disponible.Este es otro camino para rescatar y revalorizar a quienes en diversos contextos históricos sentaron las bases de lo que hoy es la ictiología nacional.Considero que este es el comienzo de una obra de mayor magnitud en la que se logre describir una parte importante de la historia de las ciencias naturales de la República Argentina.

    Notes: Abstract The spatial distribution of an intertidal population of the barnacleBalanus amphitrite was studied close to a sewage outfall nearQuequén, Argentina (38° 34′S,58° 38 ′30 ″W). All individuals within an areaof 0.8 m2 were mapped during 12 censuses, from September 1990to May 1993. Population density within the study area varied between 401 and99 ind m-2. Spatial pattern was analysed using mean distancesto the nearest neighbour (NND), goodness of fit tests between observed andexpected frequency distributions of NND, and analysis of crowding. Thespatial pattern of the population was clumped during most of the studyperiod. This trend persisted, although not reaching statisticalsignificance, when the population density decreased as a consequence ofmortality and failure of successive annual recruitments. The cohortrecruited in summer 1992 (49 individuals) was randomly distributed relativeto adult barnacles already present within the study area. No consistentrelationship was observed between mortality and NND.

    Fish fauna and environments of the Pilcomayo-Paraguay basins in Formosa, Argentina (1992)

    Notes: Abstract The ichthyofauna from subtropical (East) and tropical (West) areas in the Formosa province (Northern Argentina) is analyzed. An up-to-date list of fishes is provided, including 18 new reports for environments associated with the Pilcomayo and Paraguay rivers, considering the detailed distribution of the fishes. Dominant families in terms of number of species are Characidae, Pimelodidae, Loricariidae and Curimatidae. Percentage of individuals (about 5000 examined) were 66% for characoids and 25% for siluriforms, with less than 10% for other groups. Comparisons were made with other South American environments. Most frequent species were Psellogrammus kennedyi, Astyanax bimaculatus, Gymnocorymbus ternetzi, Hoplosternum thoracatum and Cichlasoma portalegrense. The predominant type of environment sampled, of small size and shallow depth, with extensive plant cover, and temporal level variations, explains the dominance of the above groups. This interpretation is supported by independent studies. Diversity values ranged between 0.71 and 3.92. A marked reduction in number of species from East to West was observed (79 and 41 species respectively, 31 shared). No species of Gymnotidae, Hemiodidae, Characidiidae, Trichomycteridae, Lebiasinidae nor Aspredinidae were captured in the West. The higher number of species in eastern environments is considered to be due to the influence of the Paraguay river and the complex hydrology of the area. Other factors, both historical and ecological are considered. A correlation between total phosphorous content in the water and fish richness is also suggested. Water chemistry is compared with near by environments. Sites studied showed pH values from 6.14 to 7.5. The dissolved solid contents ranged from 51.8 to 474.3 mg 1−1, within the hypohaline level. Ionic composition differed somewhat between East and West, water in the East being mainly hypocalcic, as in the Paraguay river. Conductivity was rather variable and Secchi disk values similar to those in the Parana river.
