    Notes: Escherichia coli strains devoid of one or both of the two pyruvate kinase isoenzymes (PKA and PKF), were grown on minimal media in batch fermentations. The strain lacking both PKs showed a 28% decrease on its specific growth rate when compared to the wild type. However, protein and CO2 yields did not change. Using radioactive 1-C14 glucose and collecting the CO2 produced by the cultures, it was found that the mutant lacking both pyruvate kinases, metabolized glucose mainly through the pentose pathway (PP). The increased participation of the PP in glucose metabolism in this strain, was also reflected on the levels of the glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases.© 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The thermal oxidation of natural rubbers from Hevea brasiliensis (pale crepe and smoked sheet) and Parthenium argentatum (Guayule) were studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) using the dynamic method. The atmosphere was oxygen at 110 ml/min and the temperature range was 393° -473°K. The decomposition reactions showed a pronounced exothermic emission with shoulders on the high-temperature side. The kinetic parameters were computed by using three different mathematical approaches: the heat evolution treatment of Borchardt and Daniels, the diffusion-controlled method by Jander, and the heating rate method developed by Kissinger and Ozawa. The best agreement between these methods was achieved assuming first order in the Borchardt and Daniels method and three-dimensional diffusion with the Jander model. The mass influence was analyzed observing that good agreement is obtained working with sample weight in the order of 3-4 mg. Under such conditions the activation energies (Ea) were 16-17, 18-19, and 23-24 kcal/mole for the Borchardt-Daniels, Kissinger-Ozawa, and Jander models, respectively.

    Description: Potato cyst nematodes, G. rostochiensis and G. pallida, are the most economically important nematode pests of potatoes worldwide and are subject to strict quarantine regulations in many countries. Globodera ellingtonae was recently described from Oregon (USA), with its host-plant in the field being still unknown. Roots of Andean potatoes from the North of Argentina have been found attacked by this nematode, providing further evidence that this is a potato cyst nematode species, along with G. pallida and G. rostochiensis. New information about morphological, biological and molecular aspects of G. ellingtonae is provided for diagnostic purposes. The Argentine population showed morphological differences from specimens from Oregon; therefore, new diagnostic characters were defined to differentiate G. ellingtonae from its closest species. The Hsp90 gene was shown to be a good diagnostic marker for discriminating the three PCN species. The importance of the detection of G. ellingtonae on potatoes in the Andean region is not restricted to a regional level, since the nematode is also present in USA. This species can pose a serious problem to potato crop, especially when infected tubers are used as seeds. The distribution in the South American Andes is likely to extend the currently known distribution areas because cysts are passively transported. There is a need to evaluate the possible damage it may cause to potato crops. Morphological and molecular diagnoses conducted in this work provide fundamental information for the protection of potato crops not only in those countries in the Americas where the species has already been detected, but also worldwide.
