Notes: The Petrov-Galerkin projection method is outlined for the solution of the linear elliptic equation Lu = f with homogeneous boundary conditions. By choosing appropriate finite dimensional trial and test spaces, the methods of weighted residuals, collocation, and H1 Galerkin can be interpreted within the Petrov-Galerkin projection method framework. The important question of how best to choose the trial and test functions to suit a particular type of problem is then discussed. Objective criteria associated with the matrix which governs the Petrov-Galerkin numerical process are proposed.

Notes: We describe in this paper a finite element method for the solution of viscous incompressible flow problems which incorporates an approximate form of the incompressibility condition automatically into the finite element basis. Several examples of such finite elements are presented and applied to a simple test problem.

Notes: The paper presents the projective-Newton method in the finite element space with curved finite elements along the boundary. The properties of this method are studied when the integrals are calculated by numerical quadrature. Some algorithms are derived when ω = {x ∊ R2: 0 〈 x1, x2 〈 1}.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the method of quasilinearization is extended to differential equations in Banach spaces using abstract cones. Frequently, it is useful to apply this technique to a comparison system. Several applications are given indicating the flexibility obtained by appropriate choice of the comparison system and cone.

Notes: In this paper a finite element approximation scheme for the system curl is considered. The use of pointwise approximation of the boundary condition leads to a nonconforming method. The error estimate is proved and numerically tested.

Notes: 3-Amino-5nitro-1,2,4-triazole(ANTA) was prepared and evaluated in terms of insensitivity and performance. The material is very insensitive to impact and moderately so to thermal stimuli. Performance was found to be inferior to 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB). The best synthesis of ANTA is a three-step route using commercially available 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of 2-oxo-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (K-6), a cyclic dinitrourea, is described. The laboratory synthesis was scaled-up to provide 1.6 kilograms of crystalline K-6 which was used for performance testing. K-6 was formulated with 5% Viton A and pressed to 96.5% theoretical maximum density (TMD). Performance measurements in the form of front surface velocity measurements (tantalum plate push) and 1-inch cylinder expansion experiments indicate K-6 will out-perform HMX by 4% at early volume expansions. Thermal response and shock sensitivity experiments on K-6 are also described.
