    Description: Synthesis of a small group of highly conserved proteins in response to elevated temperature and other agents that induce stress is a universal feature of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Although correlative evidence suggests that these proteins play a role in enhancing survival during and after stress, there is no direct evidence to support this in mammalian cells. To assess the role of the most highly conserved heat shock protein (hsp) family during heat shock, affinity-purified monoclonal antibodies to hsp70 were introduced into fibroblasts by needle microinjection. In addition to impairing the heat-induced translocation of hsp70 proteins into the nucleus after mild heat shock treatment, injected cells were unable to survive a brief incubation at 45 degrees C. Cells injected with control antibodies survived a similar heat shock.     Description: All human gamma delta T cells coexpressing the products of the variable (V) region T cell receptor (TCR) gene segments V gamma 9 and V delta 2 recognize antigens from mycobacterial extracts and Daudi cells. Exogenous and endogenous ligands on the cell surface, homologous to the groEL heat shock family, induced reactivities that resembled superantigen responses in this major subset of human peripheral blood gamma delta T cells. Stimulation of human V gamma 9/V delta 2 T cells is not restricted by human leukocyte antigens (HLA), including nonpolymorphic beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2M)-associated class Ib molecules.     Description: Maps of the brightness distribution of Jupiter at 1.3 cm wavelength are reported for the two orthogonal linear polarizations; one approximately parallel to the equator and one approximately parallel to the pole. The synthesized beam is 6.0 arc sec by 12.0 arc sec, which provides about 55 picture elements over the visible disk. The two maps do not differ significantly. There are no small real features of the size of one resolution element with brightness greater than 6 K. The disk brightness is approximately uniform, which is consistent with saturated ammonia vapor as the source of opacity in the atmosphere. Uniformly mixed ammonia, molecular hydrogen, and methane are strongly excluded as major sources of the opacity. Forcing the maps to have symmetry about the pole, as expected for the rapidly rotating planet, reduces the residual noise level in the maps so that there appears to be a small amount of limb darkening along the equator and a small amount of brightening at the poles.

    Description: The relative abundances of the various atomic and molecular constituents in the Jovian atmosphere are important data for studies of the origin of the solar system. The determination of the ammonia abundance presents a number of difficulties. However, difficulties related to a use of the microwave sensing technique can be largely overcome by measuring the brightness distribution across the disk. In particular, information about the atmosphere can be obtained from the degree of limb darkening, which requires only a relative brightness measurement as opposed to an absolute measurement. Valdes and Welch (1978) have used the considered approach in a study of Jupiter at 1.3 cm. In the present investigation a more general relation between the amount of limb darkening in the broad 1.25-cm inversion band of ammonia and the ammonia abundance is derived. The model is applied to new measurements of Jupiter's limb darkening at 3.4 mm.
