Notes: This study evaluated the biocompatibility of an unfilled, fluoride-releasing acrylic resin by subcutaneous implantation in guinea pigs. The experimental fluoride resin was compared to a nonfluoride, dental pit and fissure sealant (DELTON) of similar composition. Thirty-four male albino guinea pigs received four Teflon® tubes each, implanted in the dorsal area. The tubes were open at both ends, three contained the experimental fluoride resin and one held the nonfluoride resin. The tubes and surrounding tissue were excised in 1-2 cm blocks, by necropsy, at 14 and 84 days. Histological evaluation showed that inflammatory response was none-to-slight at 14 days for 95% of the fluoride and 100% of the nonfluoride specimens. Five percent of the fluoride specimens produced a moderate tissue response. At 84 days, inflammatory response was none-to-slight for 82.5% of the fluoride and 61.5% of the commercial nonfluoride specimens, while 17.5% of the fluoride and 38.5% of the nonfluoride specimens produced moderate tissue responses. Chi-squared analysis and Fisher's Exact test revealed no statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) in tissue response between the two resins at either 14 or 84 days. Hence it is concluded that the experimental, fluoride-releasing resin produces a very mild subcutaneous tissue response and that its biocompatibility is comparable to that of a widely used nonfluoride dental resin. It can, therefore, be considered as having a high potential for biological safety as a dental restorative resin or adhesive, or for other biomedical applications. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: An H1 histone gene was isolated from a 15-kilobase human DNA genomic sequence. The presence of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 genes in this same 15-kilobase fragment indicates that mammalian core and H1 histone genes are clustered.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Carozzi, N -- Marashi, F -- Plumb, M -- Zimmerman, S -- Zimmerman, A -- Coles, L S -- Wells, J R -- Stein, G -- Stein, J -- GM 32010/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Jun 8;224(4653):1115-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6719136" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The use of strontium-to-calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios in otoliths is becoming a standard method to describe life history type and the chronology of migrations between freshwater and seawater habitats in teleosts (e.g. Kalish, 1990; Radtke et al., 1990; Secor, 1992; Rieman et al., 1994; Radtke, 1995; Limburg, 1995; Tzeng et al. 1997; Volk et al., 2000; Zimmerman, 2000; Zimmerman and Reeves, 2000, 2002). This method provides critical information concerning the relationship and ecology of species exhibiting phenotypic variation in migratory behavior (Kalish, 1990; Secor, 1999).Methods and procedures, however, vary among laboratories because a standard method or protocol for measurement ofSr in otoliths does not exist. In this note, we examine the variations in analytical conditions in an effort to increase precision of Sr/Ca measurements. From these findings we argue that precision can be maximized withhigher beam current (although there is specimen damage) than previously recommended by Gunn et al. (1992).

Notes: Abstract Hylema sp. 5 females oviposit on the undersides of sepals of developing buds of both Ipomopsis aggregata and Polemonium foliosissimum. Eggs deposited on the latter are significantly more likely to be fully protected by the sepal than are eggs deposited on the former. Unexposed eggs have a significantly greater likelihood of successfully developing to the larval stage than do exposed eggs. The difference in frequency of egg exposure on the two plant species can be attributed to differences in sepal morphology: I. aggregata sepals are significantly narrower than those of P. foliosissimum. The hypothesis that females preferentially oviposit on larger flowers was unconfirmed by a manipulative choice experiment. Plants differing in the size of their flowers were potted together and presented to Hylemya in arrays in the field. Flowers of the larger-flowered pair were no more likely to be oviposited on than flowers of the smaller-flowered pair. However, there were significant negative correlations between the corolla length and the percentage of flowers laid on per day at each of two sites. There was also a significant positive correlation between the corolla width and the percentage of flowers laid on at one site. Thus females appear to be using some measure of flower morphology, or a correlated trait, in making oviposition decisions. The degree to which Hylemya is making suboptimal choices between host plant species is discussed and requires further examination.

Notes: Studies have been made of the precipitation of poly-L-glutamic acid from dilute aqueous solutions, over the pH range where the α-helical conformation is maintained. The major purpose is to establish the molecular conformation in the precipitate and to outline the mechanism of the precipitation. Utilizing molecular-weight fractions, it is shown that there are two distinctly different precipitation regions, which depend on temperature, concentration, and pH. In one of these regions, the α-region, a variety of physical properties demonstrate that precipitation occurs without any conformational change. The temperature coefficient of the precipitation process in this region indicates that it is nucleation-controlled.

Notes: Infrared and X-ray diffraction studies have established that in the β-precipitation region of poly-L-glutamic acid the chains are in the β-conformation. Therefore, a major molecular conformational change has taken place upon precipitation. It is shown that the size of the α-helical aggregates remains constant with time in the β-region. Strong evidence can be offered to indicate that the transformation involves a transitory random-coil intermediate. Reasons are advanced, in view of the stability of the β-form, as to why two distinct precipitation regions exist.
