Description / Table of Contents: Poly-α,β-D, L-aspartamide mit funktionalisierten Carboxy-Seitengruppen wurden auf drei verschiedenen Wegen synthetisiert: (i) Aminolytische Ringöffnung von Polysuccinimid, (ii) N-Carboxymethylierung von amin-funktionalisierten Polyaspartamiden und (iii) nucleophilie Addition von Iminodiessigsäure an acryloylamino-substituierte Polyaspartamide.
Notes: Poly-α,β-D, L-aspartamides featuring carboxy-functionalized side groups are synthesized by three different preparative routes: (i) aminolytic ring opening in polysuccinimide, (ii) N-carboxymethylation of amine-functionalized polyaspartamides, and (iii) nucleophilic addition of iminodiacetic acid to acryloylamino-substituted poly-aspartamides. The polymeric products, possessing inherent viscosities in the wide range of 5-30 ml g-1, are characterized microanalytically and spectroscopically. By virtue of the carboxylic acid side groups lending themselves to the reversible covalent bonding of suitably structured drug models, the polymers are designed to function as macromolecular carriers of chemotherapeutically active agents. Being perfectly soluble in aqueous media over a wide pH range, they fulfill a crucial precondition for carrier components in (parenterally administered) polymer-drug conjugates.

Notes: Four immiscible blend systems, styrene-maleic anhydride/styrene-acrylonitrile (SMA/SAN). styrene-maleic anhydride/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (SMA/ABS), poly(vinylidene fluoride)/SAN (PVF2/SAN), and PVF2/ABS, were investigated. The effect of adding up to about 10 wt% of a third polymer that is miscible with each blend component, poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA), was determined. In every case, the addition of PMMA led to the improvement of properties such as tensile strength, tensile elongation, and notched impact strength. Furthermore, the addition of PMMA resulted in finer, more uniform dispersions of the primary blend components. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of interfacial activity of the common phase component, PMMA.

Notes: A pure bacterial culture capable of utilizing either L-lysine or 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) as sole carbon source was isolated and used in continuous culture experiments to determine its response to dual substrate limitation by those two compounds. Dilution rate and feed composition were each set at three levels in a two factorial experimental design. The total chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the feed was fixed at 225 mg/L and its composition was varied by changing the ratio of lysine to 2-CP. The effects of the two independent variables (dilution rate and feed composition) on the concentrations of cells, lysine, COD, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the reactors were systematic whereas the effects on the 2-CP concentration were less predictable. The concentrations of the two substrates responded to the two independent variables in a complex interactive manner which is not explained by existing models for dual, substitutable substrates. Rather, the results suggested that the prediction of the fate of a single organic component in a reactor receiving a multicomponent feed is a very difficult task.

Notes: HTHRGC was found essential for optimizing representative preparation of high molecular weight samples and enabling fingerprinting of heavy fractions of crude oils and associated paraffinic deposits in production pipelines. Laboratory experiments aimed at simulating the process of paraffin deposition could also be easily evaluated. A comparative investigation of the performance of cold on-column and SPI (PTV type) injectors, in conjunction with high temperature capillary columns, for analysis of high molecular weight fractions, was also conducted during the course of this work.

Notes: Calculations of topological properties of the Laplacian of the electronic density function [-∇2ρ(r)] evaluated with a parametrical (CNDO) and full-electron ab initio HF methods were performed. Results for CH4, CH3Cl, CCl4, H2S, and PH3 molecules show that the use of the symmetrical transformation to the basis set is adequate to build the CNDO electronic density functions that reproduce, in a qualitative way, the topology of -∇2ρ(r) obtained from full-electron ab initio calculations. The topology of -∇2ρspin(r) was evaluated using CNDO calculations. An analysis of the critical points was carried out on modeled catalysts (Ni5 and Mo3S14H4 clusters) to study the adsorption of C on Ni5 and dissociation of H2 on Mo3S14H4. The location of critical points was associated with the most reactive sites on the cluster surface and used to predict the C adsorption path and the most convenient orientation of H2 for dissociation.   © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Differential pulse polarography was used to study the adsorption of atrazine on three tropical soils with different compositions regarding organic matter, clay, silt and sand. The corresponding Freundlich isotherms were determined and the calculated adsorption coefficients, KF, were 4.4, 9.9 and 5.2 mL g-1 for Pindorama, Monte Alegre and Ribeirão Preto soils, respectively. These values are in good agreement with previous reports. A comparison between the results obtained by differential pulse polarography and by gas chromatography was also performed showing that both techniques yield very similar isotherms.

Notes: Blends of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), with other polymers were made by film-casting from an aqueous mixture of the water-soluble sulfonium salt precursor to PPV and the second polymer. The rates of chemical doping, using As F5, and of electrochemical doping, using perchlorate counter ion, of the PPV component are strongly influenced by the nature of the added macromolecule. In all cases studied the blends appear to be phase separated under all conditions. The most versatile blend was with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), which could be heated to 225°C without degradation and which yielded the highest electrical conductivity when doped. The utility of blends was demonstrated using free-standing PPV/PEO blend samples as rechargeable battery electrodes.
