Notes: The 1H n.m.r. spectra of 3-mono-oxygenated and 3,7-dioxygenated N-acetyl-17-aza-D-homoandrost-5-enes show unequal populations of the amide rotational isomers in chloroform-d1 solution. The populations are dependent upon the orientation of the C-7 oxygen substituent but are independent of concentration. In pyridine-d5 solution the two rotameric states for each compound are almost equally populated.

Notes: 1H NMR chemical shifts of thirteen D-homo-5α-androstan-17a-ones have been determined by decoupling difference techniques. Shift changes, primarily of the H-8, H-9 and H-14 protons, produced by the introduction of hydroxy groups in the steroid have been shown to be of diagnostic importance.

Description: Gas-sensing integrated circuits consisting largely of modified static random-access memories (SRAMs) undergoing development, building on experience gained in use of modified SRAMs as radiation sensors. Each SRAM memory cell includes flip-flop circuit; sensors exploit metastable state that lies between two stable states (corresponding to binary logic states) of flip-flop circuit. Voltages of metastable states vary with exposures of gas-sensitive resistors.

Description: An electrode having higher power output is formed of an open mesh current collector such as expanded nickel covering an electrode film applied to a tube of beta-alumina solid electrolyte (BASE). A plurality of cross-members such as spaced, parallel loops of molybdenum metal wire surround the BASE tube. The loops are electrically connected by a bus wire. As the AMTEC cell is heated, the grid of expanded nickel expands more than the BASE tube and the surrounding loop of wire and become diffusion welded to the electrode film and to the wire loops.

Description: Conceptual solid-state memory device nonvolatile and erasable and has only two terminals. Proposed device based on two effects: thermal phase transition and reversible intercalation of ions. Transfer of sodium ions between source of ions and electrical switching element increases or decreases electrical conductance of element, turning switch "on" or "off". Used in digital computers and neural-network computers. In neural networks, many small, densely packed switches function as erasable, nonvolatile synaptic elements.

Description: Photodeposition or sputter deposition of refractory metal in grid pattern on solid electrolyte of alkali-metal thermoelectric converter (AMTEC) prior to deposition of electrode decreases electronic resistance and increases current and peak power of converter significantly. Concept also applicable to other devices that include electrically conductive, porous electrodes; such as solid-state fuel cells and solid-state electrolysis cells.

Description: An electrode having increased output with slower degradation is formed of a film applied to a beta-alumina solid electrolyte (BASE). The film comprises a refractory first metal M.sup.1 such as a platinum group metal, suitably platinum or rhodium, capable of forming a liquid or a strong surface adsorption phase with sodium at the operating temperature of an alkali metal thermoelectric converter (AMTEC) and a second refractory metal insoluble in sodium or the NaM.sup.1 liquid phase such as a Group IVB, VB or VIB metal, suitably tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum or niobium. The liquid phase or surface film provides fast transport through the electrode while the insoluble refractory metal provides a structural matrix for the electrode during operation. A trilayer structure that is stable and not subject to deadhesion comprises a first, thin layer of tungsten, an intermediate co-deposited layer of tungsten-platinum and a thin surface layer of platinum.

Description: Combination of thin, porous electrode and overlying collector grid reduces internal resistance of alkali-metal thermoelectric converter cell. Low resistance of new electrode and grid boosts power density nearly to 1 W/cm2 of electrode area at typical operating temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 K. Conductive grid encircles electrode film on alumina tube. Bus wire runs along tube to collect electrical current from grid. Such converters used to transform solar, nuclear, and waste heat into electric power.
