Notes: This study represents the first systematic attempt to characterize the possible sources of artifacts that can interfere with the measurement of circular intensity differential scattering (CIDS) as a function of the scattering angle. A theoretical analysis of the effect of imperfect incident circular polarizations in the measurement of baselines from nonchiral scatterers and in the signals from chiral samples is derived. From this analysis the requirements of the tolerance on the quality of the incident circular polarizations to unequivocally measure the CIDS effect are established. The protocol for alignment of the CIDS instrument and the characterization of the incident polarizations utilized in these studies are described in detail. CIDS measurements on suspensions of helical sperm cells are presented. The experimental results are modeled computationally with the use of the current CIDS theory. Good agreement between the data and the computations is obtained. The results clearly indicate the ability of CIDS to provide information on the long-range chiral organization of samples in solution.

Notes: Strips of polystyrene held in a flowing O2 or N2O atmosphere have been exposed to 240-600 nm radiation. The extent of photooxidation has been followed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Although N2O is a more reactive gas than O2, it produces a less oxidized polymer surface. This surprising observation can be correlated to the photochemistry occurring at the gas/polystyrene interface. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Dendrimers are highly ordered, hyperbranched polymers with potential for a whole range of chemical applications. Solution-phase synthesis of dendrimers is often challenging, requiring long reaction times and nontrivial purification; solid-phase methodology, on the other hand, enables reactions to be driven to completion by using a large excess of reagents with trivial purification. In this paper we show that polyamidoamine dendrimers may be synthesized conveniently and efficiently on a solid support, and that these molecules are of good homogeneity as characterized by 1H- and 13C-nmr and electrospray mass spectrometry. These solid-phase dendrimers were used as a bead loading amplification tool in the synthesis of a hexapeptide library (Xaa-Gly-Gly-Phe-Leu-Lys) to allow single bead analysis as well as allowing the efficient synthesis of two dendrimer conjugates (Leu-enkephalin-Lys and Chlorambucil). This demonstrated that peptides and small drug molecules can be grown directly onto the dendrimer or onto a linker attached to the dendrimer periphery, enhancing general dendrimer utility. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The range of application of the Manning theory of polyelectrolyte solutions (J. Chem. Phys., 51, 924 (1969)) is extended to finite concentrations of simple electrolyte by the empirical superposition of excess free energies arising from (i) interactions between mobile ions and polyions and (ii) mutual interactions between mobile ions. A comparison of published results with the modified theory shows excellent agreement over a wide range of concentrations. Results for a polyelectrolyte of low charge density suggest that the effective inter-charge spacing may be less than that of the fully extended polyion.

Notes: The effect of dissolved carbon dioxide on the glass transition temperature of a polymer, PMMA, has been investigated using molecular probe chromatography. The probe solute was iso-octane, and the specific retention volumes of this solute in pure PMMA and mixtures of PMMA with CO2 were measured over a temperature range of 0 to 180°C and CO2 pressures from 1 to 75 atm. The amount of CO2 dissolved in the polymer was calculated from a model fit to previously published solubility data determined chromatographically. Classical van't Hoff-type plots were used to determine the glass transition temperature of CO2-impregnated PMMA from low pressure up to 46 atm of CO2. Solvent-induced plasticization was observed with the glass transition temperature decreasing by about 40°C. At some pressures, glass transitions at low temperatures could not be determined from the van't Hoff plots because of the proximity of the polymer glass transition temperature to the gas-liquid transition temperature for CO2. For these pressures, a new method was developed to determine the glass transition composition. The glass transition pressure was then calculated from the measured composition and temperature using an isotherm model. In every case, the glass transition temperature decreased linearly with increasing concentration of CO2 in the polymer. However, at higher compositions, the glass transition pressure decreased with increasing composition and decreasing temperature. The observed retention volume of iso-octane with PMMA in a glassy state was correlated with an adsorption model developed from a theory for liquid-solid chromatography derived by Martire. This model accurately described the observed decrease in retention of iso-octane by adsorption on the surface of glassy PMMA with increasing concentration of CO2 dissolved in the polymer. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Reactions of GaX3 (X = Br, I) with As(SiMe3)3 in 1:1 and 2:1 mole ratios were investigated. For the latter reactant stoichiometry, substances having the empirical formulae AsBr3Ga2 (1) and Asl3Ga2 (2), the analogues of the previously reported single-source GaAs precursor (AsCl3Ga2)n, were isolated as yellow isolated as yellow insoluble powders. Low-temperature reactions in a 1:1 mole ratio resulted in the isolation of the adducts Br3Ga.As(SiMe3)3 (3) and I3Ga.As(SiMe3)3 (4). On the other hand, at room temperature the GaBr3 reaction resulted in a complex mixture from which no characterizable compounds were isolated, whereas the Gal3 reaction afforded the crystalline compound [I2GaAs(SiMe3)2]2 (5). The structures of 4 and 5 were elucidated by complete single-crystal X-ray analysis (crystal data: 4, monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 16.497(2) Å, b = 9.629(1) Å, c = 16.658(2) Å, β = 113.21(1)°, V = 2432(1) Å3, Z = 4; 5, orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 14.279(2) Å, b = 17.509(2) Å, c = 13.818(2), Å, V = 3455(1) Å3, Z = 4).

Notes: Anomalous compound surface layer growth is observed during plasma nitriding of ferrous materials under certain operating conditions. The formation of an iron oxy-nitride layer by the redeposition of sputtered cathode material was found to influence the growth kinetics of the γ'-Fe4N layer which forms during plasma nitriding of α-Fe to the extent where the γ'-Fe4N surface layer initially increases and subsequently decreases in thickness after deposition of the iron oxy-nitride layer. The nature of these layers was studied by XPS and reflection EELS to elucidate the electron structure of the valence bands of these compunds. Results are Results are presented which explain the thermodynamic stability of the iron oxy-nitride layer and the apparent de-nitriding effect that this layer formation has on the underlying γ'-Fe4N layer.
