    Notes: Summary Data on long-term research on the ecology of Central Amazonian forest streams are presented and they reveal the following basic features: Firstly, the essential input of nutrients into these waters consists of forest litter and of the fungi that decompose this litter; consequently, the bulk of the fauna is concentrated in accumulations of submerged litter. Secondly, the nutrients released by the decomposition of this litter do not appear in solution in the stream water, but are tied up throughout in the food web of the aquatic fauna. Thirdly, this food web is relatively robust. This is due to the absence of food specialists in the major channels of energy transfer. One of the staple foods for invertebrate predators consists of chironomid larvae. Fourthly, the degree of acidity and/or the content of dissolved humic substances (more or less black water) has a marked effect on the density and to a lesser extent on the species diversity of the invertebrate fauna, black waters being richer in both. Fifthly, the annual inundations of the forest in the middle and lower courses of the smaller rivers lead to drastic periodic changes of animal densities, and in some cases to annual periodicity of breeding, as exemplified by a three-year study of shrimp populations in the river ‘Tarumazinho’.

    Notes: Abstract Leaf litter colonised by aquatic decomposition fungi was labelled with Na2H32PO4 and placed in a submerged litter bank in the Central Amazonian river Tarumã-Mirim. Of a total of 540 animals subsequently collected and analysed, 17% were definitely labelled. The phase-spatial pattern of label indicated that most species, notably fish and shrimps, were territorial with a radius of movement rarely exceeding 1 m; while chironomids and other microfauna are virtually stationary. From the distribution of labelled individuals within the litter bank and the gradual buildup of label it seems the fish feed within the same small area over periods of several weeks. The appearance of label in the shrimps was more erratic. The 32P appeared to be firmly retained within the living cells throughout the experiment and passed via the foodchains previously established by analysis of gut contents. The observed predator/prey density and foraging pattern have important implications for competition theory and the maintainance of species richness.

    Notes: Abstract Between 1983 and 1988 a total of 928 litter-filled baskets (1.8 1 volume), exposed for various periods on a stream litterbank and in its vicinity, collected 2703 individuals of 122 macrofaunal species, excluding chironomids. Species abundance was analysed in relation to exposure time, annual inundation cycle, water depth and sample size. Long-term, average species packing and animal density proved to be relatively invariant and revealed non-random frequency patterns. Previous and present data indicate that these patterns are a function of regular, specific life cycles and of intra-specific, stereotype behaviour in relation to space and litter quality, among other possibilities not considered here. Potential competition for space in these communities is discussed, considering the assumption of individual random movement versus species maintenance as a function of genetically and neurophysiologically in ormed, non-random behaviour.

    Description: Presented are shortwave angular radiation models which are required for analysis of satellite measurements of Earth radiation, such as those fro the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE). The models consist of both bidirectional and directional parameters. The bidirectional parameters are anisotropic function, standard deviation of mean radiance, and shortwave-longwave radiance correlation coefficient. The directional parameters are mean albedo as a function of Sun zenith angle and mean albedo normalized to overhead Sun. Derivation of these models from the Nimbus 7 ERB (Earth Radiation Budget) and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) data sets is described. Tabulated values and computer-generated plots are included for the bidirectional and directional modes.

The models contain limb-darkening characteristics and mean fluxes. Limb-darkening characteristics are the longwave anisotropic factor and the standard deviation of the longwave radiance. Derivation of these models from the Nimbus 7 ERB (Earth Radiation Budget) data set is described. Tabulated values and computer-generated plots are included for the limb-darkening and mean-flux models.
