Summary The high affinity of basic alumina for Fe(III), is utilized for the separation of phenols on the basis of ligand exchange. The co-ordination of ligands with the central metal ion occurs through oxygen. Ligand sorption capacity and breakthrough capacity, have been determined. The distribution coefficients of 17 phenols have been determined in six solvent systems. On the basis of difference in Kd values some quantitative binary and ternary separations of phenols have been achieved.
