Notes: Summary We have examined the embryo of the centipedeEthmostigmus rubripes to determine the degree of evolutionary conservatism in the developmental processes of segmentation, neurogenesis and axon formation between the insects and the myriapods. A conspicuous feature of centipede embryogenesis is the early separation of the left and right sides of the ganglionic primordia by extra-embryonic ectoderm. An antibody to the protein encoded by theDrosophila segmentation geneengrailed binds to cells in the posterior margin of the limb buds in the centipede embryo, in common with insect and crustacean embryos. However, whereas in insects and crustaceans this protein is also expressed in a subset of cells in the neuroectoderm, the anti-engrailed antibody did not bind to cells in the ganglionic primordia of the centipede embryo. Use of the BrdU labelling technique to mark mitotically active cells revealed that neuroblasts, the ubiquitous neuron stem cell type in insects, are not present in the centipede. The earliest central axon pathways in the centipede embryo do not arise from segmentally repeated neurons, as is the case in insects, but rather by the posteriorly directed growth of axons originating from neurons located in the brain. Axonogenesis by segmental neurons begins later in development; the pattern of neurons involved is not obviously homologous to the conservative set of central pioneering neurons found in insects. Our observations point to considerable differences between the insects and the myriapods in mechanisms for neurogenesis and the formation of central axon pathways, suggesting that these developmental processes have not been strongly conserved during arthropod evolution.

    Description / Table of Contents: N-Alkylsulfur Trifluoride Imide Salts and N-Alkylsulfur Tetrafluoride ImidesSome syntheses of sulfur trifluoride imide salts RNSF3+A- [A- = AsF6-, Sb2F11-, BF4-; R = CH3 (8), C2H5 (12), (CH3)2CH (13)] are described, and their spectroscopic properties are discussed. Fluoride ion addition to 8 and 12 gives sulfur tetrafluoride imides RNSF4 [R = CH3 (14), C2H5 (15)]. in high yields.

    Description / Table of Contents: Pentafluorosulfanylamines and Sulfanylammonium Salts.From the addition of HF to sulfurtetrafluorideimides N-alkylpentafluorosulfanylamines RNHSF5(2a, 2b: R=CH3, C2H5) are obtained in quantitative yield. N, N-dialkylpentafluorosuIfanylamines Et2NSF5(5a) and pip-SF5 (5b) are isolated from the reaction of the appropriate sulfurdifluoronitridearnides NSF2NR2 and HF/SF4. Protonation of the amines with the superacidic system HF/AsF5 gives stable pentafluorosulfanyl-ammonium salts SF5NHRR′. AsF6 (12: R = R′ = CH3; 14: R=R′=H; 10: R=CH3, R′ = H). Under the same conditions the adduct AsF5· NSF2CF(CF3)2 (15) forms a cation with hexacoordinated sulfur (trans-H3NSF4CF(CF3)2-AsF66: 16), while with Asp5 · NSF2NMe2 (17) the reaction stops at tetracoordination (HNSF2NMe2+AsF6 : 18).

Description: The AlpArray programme is a multinational, European consortium to advance our understanding of orogenesis and its relationship to mantle dynamics, plate reorganizations, surface processes and seismic hazard in the Alps–Apennines–Carpathians–Dinarides orogenic system. The AlpArray Seismic Network has been deployed with contributions from 36 institutions from 11 countries to map physical properties of the lithosphere and asthenosphere in 3D and thus to obtain new, high-resolution geophysical images of structures from the surface down to the base of the mantle transition zone. With over 600 broadband stations operated for 2 years, this seismic experiment is one of the largest simultaneously operated seismological networks in the academic domain, employing hexagonal coverage with station spacing at less than 52 km. This dense and regularly spaced experiment is made possible by the coordinated coeval deployment of temporary stations from numerous national pools, including ocean-bottom seismometers, which were funded by different national agencies. They combine with permanent networks, which also required the cooperation of many different operators. Together these stations ultimately fill coverage gaps. Following a short overview of previous large-scale seismological experiments in the Alpine region, we here present the goals, construction, deployment, characteristics and data management of the AlpArray Seismic Network, which will provide data that is expected to be unprecedented in quality to image the complex Alpine mountains at depth.
