Notes: Summary Different isolates ofTrichoderma harzianum andTrichoderma hamatum were isolated from naturally infected roots ofRosellinia necatrix. T. harzianum andT. hamatum isolates overgrew cultures ofR. necatrix placed simultaneously in petri dishes. Relative levels ofR. necatrix population were assessed by the avocado leaf colonization method.T. harzianum isolate T-8, significantly reducedR. necatrix colonization of avocado leaves in comparison to other isolates in artificially and naturally infested soils.R. necatrix inoculum decreased steadily over 4 and 6 week periods in artificially inoculated soil and naturally infested soil respectively when isolate T-8 was applied, to a point where noR. necatrix could be recovered. Disease incidence of almond seedlings was significantly reduced when isolate T-8 was added to naturally infested En-Zurim soil.

Description: As Hora acknowledges (1), our paper calls for second-generation research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education that is focused on comparing modes or intensities of active learning (2). As part of this effort, we agree with Hora that researchers should use one of the many validated instruments now...

Description: A quantitative ultrasonic technique for the nondestructive assessment of impact damage is described. The method, which involves digitizing the entire backscattered ultrasonic wave from a sample, was applied to two test panels removed from a 16-ply graphite/epoxy laminate and impacted with an aluminum ball fired at a velocity of 150 ft/sec. The results of the ultrasonic NDE were compared with the results obtained using the destructive deply technique of Freeman (1984). The NDE method provides through-the-thickness information on damage and only requires access to a single side of the material, while the deply technique gives exact information on the actual damage. Good quantitative agreement between the two techniques was obtained.

Description: Ultrasonic polar backscatter, a quantitative NDE technique introduced by O'Donnell and Miller (1981), was used to characterize impact damages in a 16-ply graphite-epoxy laminate. The results were correlated with the results obtained by the destructive deply technique of Freeman (1984). The size, shape, and orientation of damage correlated well between the polar backscatter technique and the deply technique. There was good quantitative correlation between the areas of damage indicated by the two techniques, suggesting that the polar backscatter technique is sensitive to specific orientations of damage. The polar backscatter technique provides a good qualitative image of the size and shape of the largest zone of damage in each of the principal orientations; a quantitative estimate of the extent of these largest damage zones can then be obtained.
