    Description: Speckled scallops, Argopecten circularis (Sowerby, 1835), were sampled at Agua Hedionda Lagoon, Carlsbad, San Diego County from March 1984 to October 1986, to obtain basic life history data. Monthly samples of scallops were collected, measured, and released to obtain length frequency data for estimates of growth, life span, and spawning period. Subsamples of scallops were collected for determination of gonadal-somatic and adductor muscle-somatic indices.In 1984 large concentrations of speckled scallops were found on the sand-silt bottom of the lagoon, closely associated with eelgrass, Zostra marina. During the course of the study the numbers of scallops declined, until their virtual disappearance at the end of 1986. Monthly length frequency plots from 24,375 scallop measurements indicate that this is a rapidly growing species with a short life span. Gonadal- and adductor muscle-somatic indices from subsamples of 1,714 scallops indicate first spawning at age one and a relationship between temperature and spawning.Based on this study management recommendations are made for the speckled scallop.     Description: California spiny lobsters, Panulirus interruptus, are the object of intense fisheries prosecuted by both commercial and sport fishermen in California. Recent evidence indicates that the resource may be declining, and an investigation of the population dynamics is needed.     Description: The results of a three year, quarterly survey of thesubtidal marine environment offshore from Palos VerdesPoint, Los Angeles County, California are recorded. Both a 100 m (328 ft) transect consisting of 21 stations at 5 m (16 ft) intervals established in 14 to 17 m (45 to 55 ft) and a series of five arc stations located at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 m (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ft) were surveyed. Significant results included the documentation of long term cycles in the large brown kelps, Egregia laevigata and Eisenia arborea. A herbivore cycle which followed this algal cycle was also tentatively identified. Document has 89 pages.

    Description: The stage-specific distribution of Alaska plaice (Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus) eggs in the southeasternBering Sea was examined with collections made in mid-May in2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006. Eggs in the early stages of development were found primarily offshore of the 40-misobath. Eggs in the middle and late stages of development were found inshore and offshore of the 40-m isobath. There was some evidence that early-stage eggs occur deeper in thewater column than late-stage eggs, although year-to-year variability in that trend was observed. Most eggs were in the later stages of development; therefore the majority of spawning is estimated to have occurred a few weeks before collection—probably April—and may be highly synchronizedamong local spawning areas. Results indicate that sampling with continuous underway fish egg collectors(CUFES) should be supplemented with sampling of the entire water column to ensure adequate samples of all egg stages of Alaska plaice. Data presented offer new information on the stage-dependent horizontal and vertical distribution of Alaska plaice eggs in the Bering Sea and provide further evidence that the early life history stages of this species are vulnerableto near-surface variations in hydrographical conditions and climate forcing.

    Description: Reproductive data collected from porbeagle, shortfin mako,and blue sharks caught around New Zealand were used to estimate the median length at maturity. Data on clasper development, presence or absence of spermatophores or spermatozeugmata, uterus width, and pregnancy were collected by observers aboard tuna longline vessels. Directmaturity estimates were made for smaller numbers of sharks sampled at recreational fishing competitions. Some data sets were sparse, particularly over the vital maturationlength range, but the availability of multiple indicators of maturity made it possible to develop estimates for both sexes of all three species. Porbeagle shark males matured at 140–150 cm fork length and females at about 170–180 cm. New Zealand porbeagles therefore mature at shorter lengths than they do in the North Atlantic Ocean. Shortfin mako males matured at 180–185 cm and females at 275 –285 cm. Blue shark males matured at about 190 –195 cm and females at 170–190 cm; however these estimates were hampered by small sample sizes, difficulty obtaining representative samples from a population segregated by sex and maturity stage, and maturation that occurred over a wide length range.
