Because of its negative charge, CN- is a poorer π-electron acceptor than CO. The cyanometallates(0) K6[Cr(CN)6] and K4[Ni(CN)4] undergo, therefore, more easily substitution reactions than the isoelectronic carbonyls Cr(CO)6 and Ni(CO)4.In liquid ammonia at room temperature, all six CN groups of K6[Cr(CN)6] are exchanged by bi- and tridentate ligands. On the other hand, with K4[Ni(CN)4], total substitution reactions occur predominantly with mono- and bidentate ligands (see the corresponding Cr and Ni equations in „Inhaltsübersicht“).No intermediate steps of these total substitution reactions with strong π-electron acceptors have been observed. The properties of the compounds being formed are described.

Infolge seiner negativen Ladung ist das CN--Ion ein schlechterer π-Elektronenacceptor als CO. Daher sind die beiden Cyanometallate(0) K6[Cr(CN)6] und K4[Ni(CN)4] Substitutionsreaktionen leichter zugänglich als die isoelektronischen Metallcarbonyle Cr(CO)6 und Ni(CO)4. Wenn man in flüssigem NH3 als Reaktionsmedium arbeitet, werden bereits oberhalb -60° sämtliche 6 CN-Gruppen im K6[Cr(CN)6] durch zwei- bzw. dreizählige Liganden ersetzt: D = Ph2P-CH2-PPh2, Ph2P-CH2-CH2-PPh2; Ph2As-CH2-CH2-AsPh2; 2,2′-Bipyridyl, 1,10-Phenanthrolin; T = 2,2′,2″-Tripyridyl.Im Gegensatz hierzu stehen beim K4[Ni(CN)4] entsprechende Reaktionen mit ein- und zweizähligen Liganden im Vordergrund: L = PPh3, AsPh3, SbPh3.Es ist charakteristisch, daß in allen Fällen mit den starken π-Elektronenacceptoren Totalsubstitution erfolgt und auch bei tiefen Temperaturen keine Zwischenstufen auftreten. Die Eigenschaften der Verbindungen werden beschrieben.
