    Notes: Examination of binding information in the form of derivative (or finite difference) measurements is explored (1) experimentally by a thin-layer optical procedure (Dolman, D. & Gill, S. J. (1978) Anal. Biochem. 87, 127-134) and (2) theoretically by simulation in order to determine the influence of the number of data points and their standard error upon the resolvability of binding parameters in cooperative and non-cooperative systems. The data is described by the difference in optical absorbance divided by the change in the logarithm of the ligand activity and each data point is assumed to be influenced by a random error with a given variance. It is found that increasing the number of data points, which in turn effectively reduces the magnitude of the observed absorbance changes, results in an increase in the uncertainty of the resolved parameters of the system. The effect is verified by both experimental and simulation studies. Thus one is led to suggest that fewer measurements for the change of absorbance with larger magnitudes produces the most favorable situation for parameter resolution when the data is in the form of finite difference measurements.

    Notes: A comparison is made of the composition and properties of the different rubber vulcanizate networks obtained by varying the ratio of sulfur to sulfenamide accelerator and by the thermal aging of vulcanizates containing predominantly polysulfide crosslinks. It is concluded that the changes in network structure which can take place, for example, during the service life of natural rubber tires are not the direct cause of failures of the type associated with rubber fatigue at high temperatures. However, a reduction in the total number of crosslinks can accelerate failure by increasing the amount of heat generated during flexing. More stable networks giving improved resistance to fatigue at high operating temperatures are obtained by the use of higher ratios of accelerator to sulfur than are conventionally employed.

    Notes: The mechanical and optical properties of a polyester blend over a wide range of strain rates has been investigated for loading and unloading. The mechanical behavior, while being complex, was modeled adequately with a generalization of the four-parameter viscoelastic model. The optical behavior has at least a three-phenomenological coefficient dependence on the mechanical variables. Further, the stress birefringence is of opposite sign to that of the deformation.

    Notes: The decay in birefringence of glassy polycarbonate held at constant extension has been studied at 23°C, in the time-scale range 10-103 sec, up to about 6% strain. The results show that, under these conditions, the birefringence can be validly expressed as a linear hereditary integral of the strain history up to a relatively high strain level which is about 3.4% for an experimental time-scale of 100 sec. Comparison with previously obtained data on the stress relaxation behavior of the same polymer shows that, other factors remaining constant, mechanical relaxation is linear only up to about 1.1% strain. The earlier onset of mechanical nonlinearity is discussed and it is suggested that the mechanical relaxation spectrum is richer than the optical spectrum in relatively long relaxation times, corresponding to relatively slow molecular motions. It is further suggested that these slow molecular motions are accelerated first as the polymer is extended beyond the limit of linear viscoelastic behavior. The observed nonidentity between strain limits for linear mechanical and linear optical behavior is discussed in the light of current practices in photomechanical stress analysis.

    Notes: The set of synthetic polytripeptides and polyhexapeptides which can adopt a triple-helical form constitute a good model system for investigating collagen structure. Here we consider previous and new infrared spectroscopic studies on collagen and present the infrared spectra of a number of polymers with collagen-like features.The amide A band position for all triple-helical polypeptides is higher than that observed for most proteins and polypeptides, and this high frequency appears to be related to the degree of supercoiling of the triple helix. It is possible that with increased supercoiling of the three chains the angles between the groups involved in the intramolecular hydrogen bonds become less favorable, or these bonds may become unusually long.The frequency of the amide I band varies considerably for triple-helical polypeptides with different amino acid sequences, and often minor bands are observed. This finding contrasts with the observations for polypeptides in a pleated sheet or α-helical form, where the same amide I frequency is observed regardless of the amino acid composition. An explanation for this variation is proposed in terms of the hydrogen bonding properties of imino acids.Significant spectral changes in the amide I region are observed on hydration in the spectra of some triple-helical polypeptides, but corresponding changes have not been found in the collagens examined.

    Notes: Thermogravimetric data are generally more extensive than are comparable isothermal aging data, and therefore afford preliminary kinetic information in greater abundance. The kinetic analysis of the thermogram, by use of either its exact equation or a more convenient approximation formula, is straightforward in cases of volatilization via simple kinetics. Application of the analytical procedure to the thermogram for the zero-order volatilization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane yielded an estimate of 11.65 kcal./mole as the average heat of vaporization in the temperature range of 80 to 145°C. The apparent activation energy for the first-order pyrolytic volatilization of 200-mg. samples of pulverized polytetrafluoroethylene was estimated to be 66 to 68 kcal./mole in the temperature range of 520 to 610°C.

    Notes: Oxidation induction time (OIT), as measured by differential scanning calorimetry, is useful in assessing the extent of degradation in polymeric materials. Values of OIT for typical EPR and XLPE polymer insulation materials used for electric cable insulation in nuclear power plants were measured as a function of both radiation dose and antioxidant concentration after accelerated aging. Irradiations were performed at the University of Virginia Cobalt Irradiation Facility. OIT was found to decrease exponentially with increasing radiation dose and with decreasing antioxidant concentration for both ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) and cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulations. It was determined experimentally that, when polymers are subjected to a constant radiation dose rate, antioxidant concentration decreases linearly with time, and it was shown that this variation is consistent with theoretical autoxidation kinetics. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
