INYM, Prices, and the Argentine Yerba Mate “Food System” -- Chapter 5. Socio-Environmental Consequences of Low Margins -- Chapter 6. Conclusion.
Abstract: This book applies an approach to study the externalization of cost under capitalism in the production of Argentine yerba mate, an infusion with stimulant properties long used by indigenous peoples. Consumption in today’s globalized economy makes it difficult to understand the consequences of our actions across the globe. A political-ecological lens, informed by the work of Robert Sack and Ian Cook, can help guide an analysis that geographically reconstructs supply chains and reveal the realities of consumption. The use of yerba mate has become a cornerstone of Argentine society and identity, and yerba mate processors are working to expand exports globally. In Argentina’s Misiones Province, the heart of yerba mate production, the true costs of production are borne by the children, the impoverished laborers, and the environment of Argentina’s Atlantic Rainforest. These consequences of modernity, along with the efforts of an NGO to remedy them, are presented and assessed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über Synthese und die röntgenographische Strukturbestimmung von N-Acetyl-α,α-diethylglycin-N′-methyl-amid [CH3-CO-NH-C(C2H5)2-CO-NH-CH3] berichtet.
Notes: Summary Synthesis and X-ray structure analysis of N-acetyl-α,α-diethylglycine-N′-methylamide [CH3-Co-NH-C(C2H5)2-CO-NHCH3] are described. The compound was obtained from the corresponding N-acetyl derivative [CH3-CO-NH-C(C2H5)2-COOH] through the mixed anhydride procedure. It crystallizes as monohydrate (C9H18N2O2·H2O) in space group P21/c,a=7.139(1),b=11.823(2),c=15.778(3) Å, β=122.23(1)°,V=1126.53 Å3,D m=1.20 Mgm−3 (room temperature),R=0.046 for 1523 reflections. The crystal packing is dominated by two strong hydrogen bonds between the water molecule and two carbonyl oxygen atoms and two weak H-bonds to two amide-N-atoms of symmetry-equivalent molecules. The molecular conformation is closer to a 310-helix then ana-helix.

Notes: Infrared absorption and ir linear dichroism measurements have been performed on poly[d(A-T)-Cs+] films at various relative humidities. At high relative humidity, samples are in a B form; at low relative humidity, in a C form. The B → C conformational transition is shown to be a noncooperative one corresponding to a gradual evolution of the backbone geometry of the polynucleotide within the B family. the C-form-type spectrum is characteristic of an alternated phosphodiester chain with a dinucleotidic repeat unit.

Notes: The fully blocked pentapeptide Tfa-(Deg)2-L-Abu-(Deg)2-OtBu (Tfa:triflouroacetyl; Deg: Cα,α-diethylglycine; OtBu: tert-butoxy) adopts in the crystal state a regular, right-handed 310-helical structure stabilized by three N — H … O = C intramolecular 1 ← 4 (or C10) H bonds, as determined by an x-ray diffraction analysis. However, a Fourier transform ir absorption and 1H-nmr study strongly supports the view that in deuterochloroform solution the four Deg residues at both termini of the peptide main chain are involved in successive, fully extended C5 forms. A comparison with the stable, fully developed, multiple C5 conformation of Tfa-(Deg)5-OtBu indicates that incorporation of an Abu guest residue, interrupting the side-chain uniformity of the host (Deg)5 homopeptide, while altering only marginally the conformation in a solvent of low polarity, is responsible for a dramatic perturbation of the crystal-state structure. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A commercially available mechanical micro switching valve has been tested for inertness. The test mixtures used were a modified Grob test and a solution consisting of eight typical aroma compounds, both at the 2-ng level. Cryogenic focusing of the sample after chromatography including one passage through the valve revealed that irreversible interaction of some test substances with valve components was rather small. A composite main peak of a chromatogram from a fruit juice aroma exhibiting a “mixed odor” was selectively transferred (heart-cutting) to a second column and resolved into three peaks. GC-GC/sniffing assigned a minor peak to a substance formerly hidden under the composite peak. Separate heating of the valve during temperature programming of the column was found to be unnecessary.

Notes: N(Pyrimidin-2-yl)-glycine, -alanine and -phenylalanine (1-3) and their methyl esters (4-6) were investigated using electron impact (EI) mass Spectrometry. The results showed that EI-induced decomposition occurs on the carboxylic group or involves the loss of R2OH. In contrast to earlier investigations on N-(pyrimidin-4-yl)amino acids, elimination of water (in 1-3) or methanol (in 4-6) was found to be of EI-induced nature. The loss of 'COOH from M+ of ester 4 suggests the occurrence of a skeletal rearrangement leading to the isomeric N-methylamino acid.
