Notes: Thin hydrophobic polymer films produced by radio frequency (rf) plasma decomposition of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) have been produced on flat metal (titanium, stainless steel, and copper/nickel) and silicon substrates. By using a statistical design methodology, the deposition conditions have been assessed for their control of the deposition rate, refractive index, water droplet contact angle, and longevity of dropwise condensation of steam. The films showing the best performance were those deposited at the slower rates, using low rf power density and high monomer flow rates, and having the lower refractive indices. There is some dependence on substrate material, with CuNi behaving worst, and titanium providing the best results of the three metals studied. This may be connected with the stability of an interfacial oxide layer. The steam immersion tests have already exceeded 7500 hours of continuous condensation, and many of the films are still producing excellent dropwise condensation. The reasons for these effects of preparation conditions and substrate material on performance are discussed with reference to the plasma chemical process.

Notes: 5-(1-Adamantyloxy)-2H-pyrrole-2 one has been homopolymerized and copolymerized with a variety of comonomers. Polymerization was conducted in chloroform solutions with α,α′-azobisisobutyronitrile initiator. Evidence of polymerization was achieved through infrared and NMR spectra and elemental analysis. Moderate molecular weights were achieved as determined by inherent viscosity measurements and gel-permeation chromatography. Photolysis of the polymers with ultraviolet radiation induces a photochemical rearrangement resulting in the formation of isocyanate functions. A proposed mechanism suggests α-cleavage of the carbonyl to give a 1,5-diradical which rearranges to a 1,3-diradical with subsequent ring closure to give a polymer with cyclopropyl isocyanate moieties in the backbone. DSC data show all polymers to display intense exothermic activity at temperatures near 200°C on initial heating and glass transition temperatures between 194 and 245.5°C on subsequent heating. Thermolysis of the homopolymer causes rearrangement to poly[N-(1-adamantyl) maleimide]. Reactivity ratios were determined for the systems styrene (M1) and 5-(1-adamantyloxy)-2H-pyrrole-2-one (M2) (r1 = 0.06, r2 = 0.07) and methyl methacrylate (M1) and 5-(1-adamantyloxy)-2H-pyrrole-2-one(M2) (r1 = 0.35, r2 = 0.70). Q and e values for 5-(1-adamantyloxy)-2H-pyrrole-2-one are 3.40 and 1.59, respectively.

Notes: Treatment of 7,7-dimethyl-7H-dibenzo[c,h]xanthene with chlorosulfonic acid leads to the formation of the mono-, di- and tetrasulfonyl chloride derivatives. The 5 and 9 positions of 7,7-dimethyl-7H-dibenzo[c,h]xanthene were found to be most active toward electrophilic sulfonation. Polysufonates and polysulfonamides prepared from 7,7-dimethyl-7H-dibenzo[c,h]xanthene-5,9-disulfonyl chloride exhibit glass transition temperatures above 200°C and show little weight loss at temperatures to 350°C.

Notes: Several norbornane and norbornane condensed diesters and dimethanols have been synthesized. Varying the points of substitution in the norbornane moiety has been found to have little effect on the glass transition temperatures of polyesters prepared from these compounds. Increasing the number of norbornane residues as polymer side chains results in a linear increase in the Tg. The increase is an apparent function of the size of the norbornane moiety relative to the polymer repeating unit.

Description: The NCRP has recently defined RBE values and a new quantity (Gy-Eq) for use in estimation of deterministic effects in space shielding and operations. The NCRP's RBE for neutrons is left ambiguous and not fully defined. In the present report we will suggest a complete definition of neutron RBE consistent with the NCRP recommendations and evaluate attenuation properties of deterministic effects (Gy-Eq) in comparison with other dosimetric quantities.

Description: Early space radiation shield code development relied on Monte Carlo methods and made important contributions to the space program. Monte Carlo methods have resorted to restricted one-dimensional problems leading to imperfect representation of appropriate boundary conditions. Even so, intensive computational requirements resulted and shield evaluation was made near the end of the design process. Resolving shielding issues usually had a negative impact on the design. Improved spacecraft shield design requires early entry of radiation constraints into the design process to maximize performance and minimize costs. As a result, we have been investigating high-speed computational procedures to allow shield analysis from the preliminary concept to the final design. For the last few decades, we have pursued deterministic solutions of the Boltzmann equation allowing field mapping within the International Space Station (ISS) in tens of minutes using standard Finite Element Method (FEM) geometry common to engineering design methods. A single ray trace in such geometry requires 14 milliseconds and limits application of Monte Carlo methods to such engineering models. A potential means of improving the Monte Carlo efficiency in coupling to spacecraft geometry is given.

Description: In the track structure model, the inactivation cross section is found by summing an inactivation probability over all impact parameters from the ion to the sensitive sites within the cell nucleus. The inactivation probability is evaluated by using the dose response of the system to gamma rays and the radial dose of the ions and may be equal to unity at small impact parameters. We apply the track structure model to recent data with heavy ion beams irradiating biological samples of E. Coli, B. Subtilis spores, and Chinese hamster (V79) cells. Heavy ions have observed cross sections for inactivation that approach and sometimes exceed the geometric size of the cell nucleus. We show how the effects of inactivation may be taken into account in the evaluation of the mutation cross sections in the track structure model through correlation of sites for gene mutation and cell inactivation. The model is fit to available data for HPRT (hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase) mutations in V79 cells, and good agreement is found. Calculations show the high probability for mutation by relativistic ions due to the radial extension of ions track from delta rays. The effects of inactivation on mutation rates make it very unlikely that a single parameter such as LET (linear energy transfer) can be used to specify radiation quality for heavy ion bombardment.

Description: A total of 186 methane measurements from the three primary Amazon floodplain environments of open water lakes, flood forests, and floating grass mats were made over the period 18 July through 2 September 1985. These data indicate that emissions were lowest over open water lakes. Flux from flooded forests and grass mats was significantly higher. At least three transport processes contribute to tropospheric emissions: ebullition from sediments, diffusion along the concentration gradient from sediment to overlaying water to air, and transport through the roots and stems of aquatic plants. Measurements indicate that the first two of these processes are most significant. It was estimated that on the average bubbling makes up 49% of the flux from open water, 54% of that from flooded forests, and 64% of that from floating mats. If the measurements were applied to the entire Amazonian floodplain, it is calculated that the region could supply up to 12% of the estimated global natural sources of methane.
