    Notes: Abstract S fimbrial adhesins I and II (SfaI and II), produced by extraintestinal Escherichia coli pathogens that cause urinary tract infections (UTI) and newborn meningitis (NBM), respectively, mediate bacterial adherence to sialic acid-containing glycoprotein receptors present on host epithelial cells and extracellular matrix. The S fimbrial adhesin complexes consist of four proteins: SfaI-A, the major subunit protein and the minor subunit proteins SfaI-G, SfaI-S and SfaI-H. Sialic acid-specific binding is mediated by the minor subunit protein SfaI-S. In order to determine whether the minor subunit proteins SfaI-G, -S and -H play a role in the modulation of adherence and the degree of fimbriation, a trans-complementation system was developed. A non-adhesive E. coli K-12 derivative, harbouring the sfaI-A gene but lacking sfaI-G, -S and -H, was transformed with sfaI-G, -S or -H. Only SfaI-S was able to increase the degree of fimbriation and to confer adhesion properties on the recombinant E. coli K-12 strains. Amino acid residues in SfaI-S that are involved in modulation of fimbriation as well as in receptor recognition were localized by random and site-directed mutagenesis.

    Description: This paper examines results with cyclic oxidation tests of Ni(9-20) Cr(15-30) Al-(x)Zr alloys carried out at 1100 C and 1200 C in static air. The concentration of zirconium varies from 0 to 0.63 atomic percent. Significant aluminum penetration is found in metallographic and electron microscopic examination of oxidized surfaces. Small amounts of zirconium lead to minimal penetration, and with increased zirconium content pronounced oxide penetration is observed.

    Description: An attempt has been made to determine the permeation rate of hydrogen in IN-100 and Waspaloy by determining the evolution rate of hydrogen from a closed capsule of the test materials. Enclosed vanadium hydride was the source of hydrogen in the capsule. The presentation discusses the treatment of data and assesses the validity of the techniques in permeation measurement. In addition to permeation experiments, the solubility and diffusion of hydrogen in IN-100 and Waspaloy were also determined. For hydrogen diffusion in Waspaloy, Delta H was 38.5 kJ and D(0) was 0.0026 sq cm/sec. For IN-100, Delta H was 68.2 kJ and D(0) was 0.059 sq cm /sec. Both IN-100 and Waspaloy exhibited limited solubility of hydrogen at pressures up to 340 atmospheres hydrogen.

    Description: The solubility of hydrogen, at a fixed hydrogen pressure, was measured in two different heat treatment conditions in both IN-100 and Waspaloy by equilibrium and analysis. The diffusion coefficients were determined by measuring the rate of hydrogen evolution in a vacuum. Hydrogen evolution appeared to be a diffusion-controlled process in all cases. For hydrogen diffusion in Waspaloy, Delta H was 38.5 kJ and D0 was 2.6 x 10 to the -7th sq/s. For IN-100, Delta H was 68.2 kJ and D0 was 59 x 10 to the -7th sq/s. The values for Waspaloy are close to those for pure nickel. The values for IN-100 are more similar to high nickel alloys that show trapping or surface layer impedance.

    Description: NiCrAl alloys are improved by the addition of zirconium. These alloys are in the Beta or gamma/gamma' + Beta region of the ternary system. Zirconium is added in a very low amount between 0.06 and 0.20 weight percent. There is a narrow optimum zirconium level at the low value of 0.13 weight percent. Maximum resistance to cyclic oxidation is achieved when the zirconium addition is at the optimum value.
